Your opportunity:
The Department of Pharmacology & Toxicology is among the oldest in North America. We offer training in pharmacology and toxicology to both undergraduate and graduate students who may subsequently go on to exciting research, regulatory and administrative careers in academic, industrial, and healthcare provision settings. We also provide training to professional programs such as Medicine and Pharmacy.
As the Lab and Administrative Assistant, you will collaborate closely with faculty, research staff, and students at all levels (post-doctoral, graduate, undergraduate) to support the efficient operation of the laboratory and research program. Your strong organizational and communication skills will be key in assisting with routine lab activities, procedural documentation, and providing essential administrative support. Your contributions will help foster a reliable and well-organized environment for both research and learning.
Your responsibilities will include:

  • Acting as the first point of contact for general enquiries and providing orientation on work procedures and practices
  • Applying established standards when preparing routine samples for research projects and experiments
  • Documenting and updating standard operating procedures and procedures manuals
  • Drafting and submitting documented procedures to the Research Ethics Board (REB) for approval
  • Creating and maintaining documentation related to biosafety and biosecurity to support licence holder requirements
  • Tracking and monitoring information for audits and maintaining awareness of the financial status of accounts
  • Cleaning laboratory spaces and restocking supplies
  • Troubleshooting routine equipment issues during lab sessions
Essential Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree or acceptable combination of equivalent experience
  • Minimum two (2) years of administrative experience in a laboratory or academic research environment
  • Experience supporting routine laboratory activities, including sample preparation, ordering supplies, and troubleshooting technical issues for lab equipment
  • Demonstrated experience maintaining standard operating procedures and other procedural documentation
  • Demonstrated experience supporting Research Ethics Board (REB) submissions
  • Demonstrated experience developing and maintaining biosafety and biosecurity documentation to support compliance with regulatory and licence holder obligations
  • Experience acting as the first point of contact including managing general inquiries in a timely and professional manner
  • Experience providing orientation on work procedures and practices
  • Experience with minute-taking, agendas, managing calendars, and supporting committees
  • High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Strong organizational skills, including attention to detail, and the ability to follow established protocols accurately
