About this Role
Directions Youth Services is a division of Family Services of Greater Vancouver (FSGV), which for more than 90 years has provided a variety of essential resources for children, families and individuals in the Greater Vancouver community. We believe in the resiliency of Vancouver\xe2\x80\x99s youth who are at-risk, homeless, and street-involved. We assist youth under the age of 25 to get counselling for trauma, mental health or substance issues. Our teams strive to create spaces and build connections with youth who are facing challenges of street life, substance use, mental health concerns, and disconnection from their communities. Directions inclusive programs of shelter and drop-in, safe houses and other unique programs are committed to being a community leader in harm reduction work and fostering low-barrier spaces where all youth are welcome.

This position is an evening volunteer position, the goal being to support the Dusk to Dawn mean program and it\xe2\x80\x99s staff working in a youth resource centre that operate a soup kitchen to feed homeless youth in Vancouver\xe2\x80\x99s homeless youth in Vancouver\xe2\x80\x99s Downtown South.

Volunteer Hours: - Tuesday and Thursday Mornings 7:30 am- 10:30 am (Breakfast prep)
- Daily Evenings 6pm- 9:00pm with Dinner served at 8pm
Multiple Days Available

Location: 1138 Burrard Street, Vancouver BC, Directions Youth Services Centre

What you bring
Responsibilities

  • Working along with centre staff in the preparation and service of the nightly meal
  • Maintaining health and safety standards in the kitchen
  • Ensuring open communication with Kitchen Coordinator and Program Management
  • Ensuring that food is stored safely, and ensuring proper food distribution to clients reduce wastage
  • Ensuring kitchen is kept at a high standard of cleanliness
  • Maintain relevant documentation and timesheets
  • Adhere to all program and agency policies, procedures and safety standards; including but not limited to confidentiality policy. Also to report concerns to DYCS staff in a timely manner; including legally required, reporting concerns; risk of harm or others and child protection concerns
  • Model pro-social behaviour for program participants
  • Maintaining a culture of \xe2\x80\x9cPeople helping people help themselves\xe2\x80\x9d

Experience
  • Experience working with homeless youth or with other marginalized populations is an asset
  • Applications with personal experience with addition or stet involvement require a minimum or two years clean/ sober and away from service

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Social skills, a desire to help and a belief in the immense benefit of feeding people

Additional Requirements
  • Successful completion of criminal record check
  • Successfully complete a course on the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIPPA)
  • Proof of Covid-19 vaccination status will be required
