EDUCATION: Ontario Secondary School Diploma
TECHNICAL: Previous kitchen and baking experience necessary
CERTIFICATION: Safe Food Handlers certification necessary; Criminal Reference Check Required
SUMMARY:
The Hospitality Services department oversees all hospitality operations of the Wilfrid Laurier University Students' Union on the Waterloo and Brantford campuses. Our operations consist of Wilf's Restaurant & Bar and The Turret on the Waterloo campus, and The Belmont and Golden Grounds Coffee House on the Brantford campus. Reporting to the Hospitality Operations Manager and the Brantford Hospitality Supervisor, you will be focused on the daily kitchen operations within our business establishments on the Brantford campus. To be successful in this role you will need to be highly motivated to work in a fast-paced environment, have high attention to detail, adequate written and verbal communication, time management and organizational skills, as well as exemplify excellent interpersonal skills.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
Recognizing that the role encompasses a broad and wide variety of responsibilities, it is important to note that not all functions are contained within this definition, and the position itself should be ever changing and adaptive to best meet the needs of the Students' Union and its members. Specific roles and responsibilities allocated to the position include, but are not limited to, the following:
Operate in accordance with the Vision, Mission, and Guiding Principles, by-laws and policies of the Wilfrid Laurier University Students' Union;
Work safely at all times by following all health and safety policies and procedures, using proper personal protective equipment (PPE) when required, and promptly reporting any workplace hazards to a manager immediately;
Remain knowledgeable of all applicable departmental and human resources policies and procedures of the Students' Union, and abide by such;
Remain certified and up-to-date in Safe Food Handler training, as well as uphold and enforce all health regulations pertaining to the storage, preparation, and delivery of food and beverage products;
Maintain a clean and safe work environment through regular cleaning and sanitation tasks within the kitchen, such as but not limited to, sweeping, mopping, and cleaning tables, counters, shelves and walls;
o Remove garbage, recycling and kitchen food waste as needed, and properly place in designated containers;
Ensure the delivery of exceptional guest service through maintaining high product quality and a professional atmosphere in The Belmont, as well as during catering events;

Assist with product deliveries by ensuring all items on the order list are present and in good condition, items are not expired, and putting away all items in their designated storage locations while abiding by proper item rotation, first-in first-out (FIFO);
Prepare all fresh baked items (cookies, muffins, croissants, et al) to the identified stock levels by the time The Belmont opens each day;
Prepare proteins, produce, sauces, and ready-to-serve items according to established standards, directions, and identified stock levels;
During service times, prepare menu items, such as but not limited to: salads, sandwiches, entrees, and desserts;
Ensure daily prep stock levels, and all other duties assigned, are completed prior to the end of shift;
Assist with caterings through room set-up, meal preparation, serving, take-down and clean-up; and
Any other duties as assigned by the Hospitality Operations Manager, or Brantford Hospitality Supervisor.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work will mainly be completed standing or walking around the establishment(s), as well as the following physical demands are required:
o Walking and standing as a major job function;
o Carrying and transporting objects of various sizes up to a maximum of 50lbs;
o Pushing or pulling contents that weigh a maximum of 75lbs;
o Stretching, reaching, bending, stooping, crouching and/or kneeling for short periods of time; and
There is potential you may be exposed to mental health crises and/or personal disclosures of violence/harassment when working.
TIME COMMITMENT:
The work term begins in August 2025, and concludes by April 30 2026;
Full-time, contract position, with an expectation to work a minimum of 25-40 hours a week;
Traditional hours of operation for The Belmont are 8:00am to 8:00pm Monday through Thursday, and 8:00am to 4:00pm Friday, however your will start work at 6:00am daily to receive deliveries and prepare baked goods accordingly;
o You must maintain reliable transportation for such; and
o Due to the nature of the hospitality services industry, it should be noted that hours may vary, often being irregular, and may be modified at any time by the Hospitality Operations Manager.
