Job Description

Reporting to the Executive Chef, the Kitchen Assistant supports the kitchen staff in preparing and serving meals to residents in a retirement home, ensuring a clean, safe, and welcoming environment. This role is critical in maintaining high standards of hygiene and resident satisfaction.



This is a casual position with no guaranteed hours per week.




Duties and Responsibilities:






Kitchen and Equipment Cleaning



Wash and sanitize dishes, glassware, utensils, pots and pans using dish machines or by hand. Ensure all kitchenware is properly cleaned and stored in designated areas. Clean and maintain dishwashing equipment and workstations. Take out trash and clean garbage cans regularly. Sweep and mop kitchen floors and wipe down surfaces to ensure a sanitary environment.

2. Support for Kitchen Staff




Assist Executive Chef and kitchen staff with basic food preparation (washing, chopping, assembling ingredients); prepare simple meals or sides, as required. Work collaboratively with kitchen staff, dietary aides and healthcare staff. Replenish supplies such as dishes, utensils or cleaning products.

Compliance and Safety




Follow proper food safety and sanitation procedures at all times. Report any broken or malfunctioning equipment to the supervisor. Adhere to health and safety guidelines and retirement home policies.

4.

Resident Interaction



Deliver meals to residents or dining areas, as required. Provide respectful and friendly service to residents. Report any resident feedback or concerns to supervisor.

5.

Other




Works in a safe manner and ensures department operations are carried out in a safe manner in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, associated regulations, Brighton Retirement Living's policies, procedures, and other associated legislation. Other related duties, as assigned.

Physical Demands:






Intermittent physical activity including walking, standing, sitting and lifting.

The successful candidate will possess the following:



Education




Secondary school diploma or equivalent.

License, Registration, Training and Clearances




Police Record Check (per RHA), including Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC). Immunization(s) and Tuberculosis (TB) testing, per Brighton Retirement Living's policy.


Experience



Previous experience in a kitchen or dishwashing role. Previous experience in healthcare or senior living environment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities




Awareness of food safety and hygiene standards (e.g. cross-contamination prevention). Basic cooking and food preparation skills. Familiarity with kitchen tools and equipment. Ability to follow instructions and procedures consistently. Strong time management and organizational skills. Basic communication skills to coordinate with kitchen and dining staff.
A combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
