What you can expect in a typical day

As a junior/intermediate process engineer in our Engineering Services team, you will be working alongside a multi-disciplinary team of engineers and designers on a wide variety of capital and expense projects at our Home Office in Saint John, NB, in support of our safety, efficiency, reliability, production, and energy transition goals.

Because this is a hybrid opportunity, you will enjoy being able to work from home a portion of each week and take advantage of face-to-face time when you are in our modern offices to collaborate and build strong professional relationships with your peers and stakeholders. In the role, you will be supporting Canada\xe2\x80\x99s largest oil refinery here in Saint John, as well as Irving Oil\xe2\x80\x99s network of terminal facilities throughout Atlantic Canada and the US eastern seaboard. You will also provide engineering support to the Whitegate refinery in Ireland, as necessary.

You will engage with operating area teams and with process safety management team stakeholders as you investigate, develop design, and execute capital and expense projects, and optimize the process units within our operations. This position is a Junior/Intermediate level engineering position within our Engineering Services Group. This position relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish deliverables in a well-defined supervised environment.

You will make visits to the Saint John Refinery from time to time to review field conditions associated with your design activities, and you may be asked to travel occasionally to other locations in support of your work.

Your Roles and Responsibilities:
  • Key activities for a process engineer in Engineering Services include working with Heat and Material Balance and process simulations, performing hydraulic calculations, preparation of equipment/ instrument datasheets, line lists, and process design basis, management of PFDs and P&IDs, development of operating guidelines etc.\xe2\x80\xa6
  • Develop and implement plans for problem solving and complex design completion, as well as other improvement initiatives considering multiple aspects such as: safe operations, process requirements, budget, and schedule, impacts on operator effectiveness, and hazards.
  • Collaboration with Front End and other Engineering Services disciplines, Process Engineering, Refinery Technical, Process Safety Management and Project Execution Teams
  • Receive coaching and mentoring on process technical by other process engineering and technical team members, to develop our capabilities.
  • Participate in P&ID, PHA\xe2\x80\x99s & LOPA\xe2\x80\x99s as required.
  • Facilitate project work and studies with 3rd party consultants, technology licensors and engineering contractors. Direct, review and approve their work and deliverables.
  • Support operational troubleshooting and process optimization, as required.
  • Perform quality management and routine procedure reviews; develop process improvements related to capital and expense projects.
  • Keep cross-functional leaders informed of project progress and status updates.
  • Monitor and design key best practices to improve refinery and product and terminal operations.
  • Remain current on emerging refining technologies.
Professional skills:
  • Good understanding of refinery operations as related to capital project work.
  • Open to receiving coaching and mentoring at junior and intermediate levels.
  • Understanding of the basic economic drivers of oil refining.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in coordinating, leading, and directing other Engineering Services employees and project members. Ability to make clear, effective presentations to communicate recommendations to stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision / direction and apply sound engineering judgement on technical matters.
  • Self-motivated.
  • Attention to schedule and cost, and timely decision making.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. You enjoy figuring out the root of problems and designing better processes and procedures to minimize or eliminate them.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.
  • Experience representing the interests of refinery owner/operators in capital / expense project development would be an asset.
  • Leadership experience (informal or formal) would be an asset.
  • Able to work in the field, including working in year-round weather conditions, able to bend, climb, stoop, kneel, crawl, etc. and able to lift up to 20lbs. You must be comfortable with high elevation climbing, working at heights, and in enclosed spaces. You must be able to wear full PPE as required by safety standards.
Travel:
  • Occasional Travel is a requirement for this role.
Education and experience:
  • University degree in Chemical Engineering with EIT or P.Eng. designation (or immediate eligibility) in New Brunswick is required.
  • 5+ years of engineering experience preferably in downstream oil and gas industry.
  • Experience in heat exchanger modelling (EDR / HTRI) and hydraulic software (AFT Fathom / AFT Arrow or similar) would be an asset.
  • Experience with AspenHYSYS (or similar) along with PSV and Vessel software would be an asset.
  • Experience with participation in PHA and LOPA Reviews is required.
