Junior Materials Technologist

InnoTech Alberta is seeking a Junior Materials Technologist to join its Advanced Materials & Asset Integrity team. This role supports the delivery of client services from Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Labouratory team. With a focus on supporting Alberta\xe2\x80\x99s energy and manufacturing sectors, the Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Labouratory team works closely with industrial clients to develop and provide specialized analytical and test methods to evaluate material performance in support of client innovation pursuits including improved asset reliability and integrity and de-risking of advanced manufacturing processes. The team also supports the assessment and development of novel materials, coatings, and manufacturing techniques that improve asset integrity, increase performance of equipment, and lower environmental impacts. The team operates a world-class materials laboratory with expertise in characterization and analysis of advanced materials including hardfacing and overlays, metals, castings, composites, thermal spray coatings, surface treatments, and non-metallics.

Reporting to the Supervisor, Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Labouratory, the junior technologist will be exposed to a wide variety of material testing, including unique test methods, and Research & Development (R&D) projects. The successful candidate will support ongoing and future activities within the group and will assist in the design, construction, and commissioning of experimental test apparatuses as well as test specimens.

The successful incumbent will be accountable for (but not limited to) the following:
  • Collect, compile and document experimental data
  • Assist with development, organization, monitoring and maintenance of experiments
  • Assist with interpretation and presentation of data and results of experiments
  • Write data summaries
  • Assist in operation, maintenance, testing, calibrating and providing equipment that conforms to specifications detailed in applicable standards
  • Participate in innovative processes in technical and operational areas
  • Assist in reviewing proposals and reports as requested
  • Handle, store and dispose of chemical and waste materials
  • Assist in generating safe work procedures, responding to, and implementing audit safety items and changes to quality audit items
  • Develop expertise and technical services marketable internally and externally
Qualifications and skills we are looking for:
  • Diploma in Materials Engineering Technology (or a related field)
  • 0 \xe2\x80\x93 3 years of experience in an industrial environment including metallurgical preparation and analysis of materials, mechanical testing of materials, is preferred
  • Other post-secondary education, such as instrumentation, with relevant experience, is considered an asset
  • Comfortable with technology and computer software
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) is required
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) skills as well as the ability to write technical data reports
  • Comfortable working within an industrial setting and familiarity with industrial hazards and processes
  • Understand ISO 17025, laboratory and pilot plant safety, and WHMIS
  • Familiar with ASTM and ISO standards in the areas of metallurgical preparation and analysis, wear, and mechanical testing
  • Aptitude to read, review, and interpret testing standards and specifications and ensure testing is meeting industry standards
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment
  • Flexible to complete a variety of tasks
  • Ability to prioritize workflow
  • Class 5 Drivers License
