We deliver detailed, in-depth analyses, targeted to their intended audiences, in a cost and time efficient manner.

Matrix Heritage is seeking a new part-time team member for our heritage department, in the role of Junior or Intermediate Heritage Consultant, to support research activities, report production, and proposal writing. The ideal candidate is detail oriented, works well independently with excellent time management skills, takes direction, has strong interpersonal skills for client facing activities, is proactive in finding information and solutions, ensures the accuracy of their work, and is enthusiastic and knowledgeable about history and architectural history or closely related fields. This position is part time. Work (excluding archival research and site visits) can be undertaken from our office at 6131 Perth Street, Richmond, Ottawa, or remotely. Hours are generally consistent.

Roles and Responsibilities:



Research:

Conduct in-depth research on historic sites, buildings, and structures, using primary and secondary sources, including documents, maps, images, and artifacts, both online and in-person at relevant libraries and archival collections. Support research activities of the Senior Architectural Historian and Heritage Consultant.

Data Analysis:

Analyze historical data and primary documents to extract valuable insights and provide context for heritage projects. Analyze data from public engagement activities to accurately reflect public sentiment.

Reporting:

Assist in preparing and writing comprehensive reports and documentation of historical research findings. Ensure the accuracy and full attribution of all reported information. Ensure the format of documents follows provided models. Proofreading and assembly of document components into finished PDF files for clients.

Site Visits:

Carry out site visits for Cultural Heritage Evaluation Reports, Cultural Heritage Assessment Reports, Heritage Impact Assessments, Cultural Landscape studies, Heritage Conservation Districts, etc.

Photography:

Photograph sites, buildings, and architectural details for reports.

Proposal Writing:

Support the development of proposals/bids for projects.

Project Collaboration:

Work closely with the heritage and archaeology team leads, as well as multidisciplinary teams, including architects, archaeologists, and conservationists, to integrate historical insights into project planning and execution.

Continuous Learning:

Stay updated with current trends and practices in historical research and built-heritage conservation. Stay up to date with changes in heritage, planning, and environmental legislation.

Preferred Qualifications:



Completed MA in History, Art and/or Architectural History, Canadian Studies, Conservation, or a closely related field; or equivalent experience in historical research. Excellent research and analytical skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Proficiency with a variety of citation formats. Proficiency in data collection, report design, and production. Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Proficiency with PDF documents. Familiarity with file sharing services, such as SharePoint. Familiarity with the Standards and Guidelines for the Conservation of Historic Places in Canada (Parks Canada, 2010) Familiarity with Ontario legislation and other relevant documents, including the Ontario Heritage Act, Ontario Regulations 9/06 and 10/06, Provincial Planning Statement (2024), Ontario Heritage Toolkit (updated 2025) etc. Familiarity with Environmental Assessments an asset. Knowledge of Indigenous histories an asset. Ability to drive and access to a vehicle and asset. A passion for heritage. Ability to work effectively in both a collaborative, team-oriented environment, and independently. Eagerness to learn and adapt to new challenges.
