Description: The Assembly of First Nations is seeking a detail oriented and highly organized Junior Finance Officer who, under the direction of the Chief Financial Officer, will be responsible for supporting finance officers to ensure costs are allocated according to established procedures. These procedures are in accordance with approved budgets, control of accounts and records in such areas as disbursements, travel expenses, and service contracts. Duties include performing day to day financial activities such as accounts payables and receivables, printing cheques, posting and preparing journal entries, assisting with month-end accruals as assigned; assisting with review of GST, PST, QST and NRT returns and payments, participating in audits and data collection efforts and preparing explanations to auditors. The Junior Finance Officer will assist the finance team with disbursements, travel expenses, and service contracts; promptly anticipating and responding to information and action requests related to finance and relevant information throughout and across the Sector and other AFN Sectors.

  • At least 2-3 years’ experience in a finance and accounting role
  • Experience working for Charity or non-profit organization is an asset
  • Knowledge and understanding of current and acceptable financial practices and
procedures
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and accuracy
  • Experience working with First Nations communities
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, teamwork and judgement
  • Self-motivated, team player excited to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task and set priorities to ensure timely completion of
work within established deadlines
  • Strong computer skills in accounting software preferably in SAGE 300 and Excel
  • Effective verbal and listening, communications, organizational skills
  • Resourceful, proactive, reliable, trustworthy, and assertive when necessary
  • Ability to handle confidential information in a professional & discrete manner
  • English is the working language; however, the ability to work in both official
languages or an Indigenous language is an asset
