Job Description



The

Junior Estimator/CAD Technician

supports the Fabrication Manager by handling the technical, estimating, and detailing aspects of structural steel projects. This role assists with preparing cost estimates, reviewing drawings, producing or coordinating CAD shop drawings, and supporting project coordination.

The

Junior Estimator/CAD Technician

ensures accuracy in take-offs, pricing, and fabrication details while helping bridge communication between engineering, project management, and the shop floor.

Key Responsibilities



CAD & Detailing Support



Prepare and/or revise CAD shop drawings and steel details under direction of the Fabrication Manager. Review structural drawings to identify discrepancies, RFIs, or clarifications. Coordinate with MWS project managers, customers and detailers to ensure drawings are ready for fabrication.

Estimating & Take-offs



Assist in preparing detailed material, labour, and cost estimates for steel fabrication projects. Perform quantity take-offs from structural drawings and specifications. Obtain and compare supplier/subcontractor quotes for accuracy and competitiveness. Answer RFI from suppliers/subcontractors as needed.

Project Coordination



Support scheduling by aligning material orders, other outside suppliers (such as galvanizing and painting), shop drawings, and production timelines.
Track and update project documentation, drawings, and revisions.

Communicate with shop supervisor to ensure fabrication aligns with design intent.
Coordinate internal trucking and prepare required delivery request forms for MWS drivers.

Assist Fabrication Manager with weekly scheduling meeting.

Quality & Compliance



Ensure all drawings and estimates comply with relevant standards (CWB etc.). Maintain accurate project records and documentation for traceability.

Continuous Improvement



Suggest improvements in estimating accuracy, drawing workflows, and coordination practices. Assist in adopting new software, technologies, or tools for CAD and estimating.

Other Duties



Perform regular inventory of shop material
Order steel and other material as required

Prepare drawings and estimates for small jobs. Coordinate completion with shop supervisor to ensure delivery on time to the customer.

Qualifications



0-5 years' experience in structural steel estimating, detailing, or project coordination is preferred. Proficiency in CAD software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar). Strong ability to read and interpret structural and architectural drawings. Knowledge of steel fabrication processes, materials, and industry standards. Strong analytical and mathematical skills for estimating. Effective communication and organizational abilities. Post-secondary education in Civil/Structural Engineering, Drafting/Design, or Construction Management is strongly preferred.
