Triage Metrix Associates LP is a small consultancy firm based in Yellowknife with a primary focus on providing health economics, policy, and operations expertise. We also work across other areas including education, justice, and community services. In addition to policy and program work, we specialize in data analytics, modeling, and forecasting, and operate customizable software platforms for clients across multiple sectors. Position Summary
We are seeking a motivated Junior Economist or Economic Intern to support our work in developing and applying economic and social impact models for health, social services, and infrastructure projects across the North. This role is ideal for a recent graduate or early-career professional who is interested in working on projects focusing on applied economics, social policy, and Indigenous equity frameworks. This is an exciting opportunity to work on cutting-edge projects that shape health, social, and infrastructure policy in Canada's North, and to be mentored by senior economists and health policy experts.
The role will primarily focus on researching existing social impact models, assisting in the development of new frameworks, and supporting applied modeling projects under the guidance of senior economists and policy advisors. The successful candidate will thrive in a fast-paced, multi-project environment and demonstrate initiative, precision, and strong communication skills.
Recent graduates or candidates currently enrolled in related graduate studies will be considered for an intern role.
Remote Work
The candidate will primarily work from home but
must
be based in Yellowknife (preferred) or Calgary
to allow close collaboration and in-person work with our senior health economists and other team members. Travel may be required to Yellowknife and other locations in Canada up to once per month.
Hours of Work
This position will be scheduled for 30-35 hours a week. Flexible working hours are available, provided they align with the operational needs of the team and project deadlines. Part-time hours (20 hours per week) and a longer term duration are also possible. Core collaboration hours may be established to support coordination across time zones and ensure availability for meetings and team communication.
This is a term position to January 31, 2025.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct background research on existing economic and social impact models, including cost-benefit analysis, social return on investment (SROI), and Indigenous-value frameworks.
Review academic literature, government reports, and other national and international methods to identify strengths and limitations of current modeling approaches.
Assist in adapting and developing new social impact models tailored to Northern and Indigenous contexts.
Support the design of analytical frameworks that incorporate both quantitative indicators and qualitative, community-based measures of well-being.
Help draft methodological notes, model assumptions, and technical documentation for internal and client use.
Contribute to scenario design and sensitivity testing to assess the robustness of new models.
Applied Research & Development
Pilot test new social impact models using available datasets and case studies.
Compare and evaluate alternative modeling approaches, highlighting their applicability to real-world programs (health, social services, infrastructure).
Assist in creating hybrid frameworks that blend conventional economic measures with Indigenous societal values and lived experience.
Document and catalogue models and tools for future reuse by the team.
Collaboration & Learning
Work closely with senior economists and policy advisors to refine models and ensure methodological soundness.
Engage with knowledge holders and community partners to integrate local perspectives into model design.
Provide administrative and project support to the CEO and project teams.
Attend in-person meetings with clients or partners as required.
Prepare internal correspondence and finalize administrative documents.
Assist with formatting and submission of proposals or funding applications.
Other related duties as required.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Economics, Public Policy, or a related field.
A Master's degree is an asset but not required
Training or coursework in health economics, applied economics, program evaluation, or research methods.
Proficiency in Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Slides, Forms) and Microsoft Office Suite.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English (native-level fluency or equivalent is required).
Strong organizational and time management skills, with attention to detail.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a hybrid or remote environment.
Ability to travel within Canada if required for on-site work.
Assets
Familiarity with health economic and social impact measurement approaches (e.g., SROI, CBA) an asset.
Familiarity with Indigenous knowledge systems and data governance principles (Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, TCPS2, OCAP) and reconciliation-focused approaches.
Experience using quantitative tools and data management applications (Excel/Google Sheets, R/RStudio, SQL).
Experience in using project management software to implement waterfall and Kanban methodologies.
Experience working in health policy, Indigenous health, or health data analytics.
Familiarity with Canadian health systems or health research terminology.
Fluency in a second language, particularly Inuktitut or French.
