Junior Door Hardware Consultant (entry Level)

Cookstown, ON, CA, Canada

Job Description

This is a long-term opportunity

for someone who wants to start a rewarding career in a specialized and growing field. If you're dependable, organized, and ready to learn -- we want to hear from you.

Spyder SC is a rapidly growing consulting firm based in Bradford, Ontario. We are seeking a

detail-oriented and curious problem-solver

to join our team as a

Junior Door Hardware Consultant

. This role focuses on

planning, coordination, and design support

for door hardware in

commercial buildings

, ensuring spaces are safe, secure, and accessible for everyone.

You don't need prior experience in door hardware --

we provide full training and mentorship

.
If you enjoy working with technical details, organizing information, and collaborating with others to create well-functioning spaces, this could be the perfect career path for you.

A

door hardware consultant

is a specialist who works with architects, contractors, building owners, and suppliers to select, specify, and coordinate all the components that go into a building's doors -- both for

function

and

code compliance

.

Here's what we typically do:

Understand building requirements

- Review blueprints and floor plans to figure out what each doorway needs in terms of accessibility, fire safety, and security.

Select appropriate hardware

- This includes locks, handles, hinges, closers, panic bars, electronic access systems, and specialty fittings.

Ensure compliance

- Make sure all chosen hardware meets building codes, fire codes, ADA (accessibility) standards, and safety regulations.

Create detailed hardware schedules

- Document exactly what hardware goes on each door, often in coordination with suppliers and installers.

Coordinate with the project team

- Work closely with architects, contractors, security teams, and sometimes interior designers to ensure the chosen hardware matches the building's functionality and design.

Problem-solving

- Troubleshoot tricky doors, unusual security needs, or retrofits for older buildings.
It's a mix of

technical knowledge

,

design awareness

, and

project management

-- kind of like being an interior designer, security consultant, and code expert all in one, but specifically for doors.

A

Junior Door Hardware Consultant

is essentially in the apprentice phase of the role -- learning the trade while handling smaller, less complex parts of projects.

Here's what that usually looks like:

Main Responsibilities

Learning the products

- Getting familiar with all the different types of locks, hinges, closers, access control systems, finishes, and brands.

Assisting with hardware schedules

- Helping compile lists of which pieces of hardware go on each door, usually under supervision.

Reading plans & specs

- Learning how to read architectural blueprints and construction specifications so they can identify door and frame requirements.

Basic code awareness

- Starting to understand building codes, fire ratings, and accessibility requirements, and how they apply to doors.

The Learning Curve

In the junior role, you're not expected to be the final decision maker on products or compliance. Instead, you:

Shadow senior consultants. Sit in on project meetings. Take on simpler doors (like office interiors) before moving up to complex ones (like fire-rated hospital doors or security-controlled school entrances).
It's very

detail-oriented

work, but it can be creative too -- you're balancing safety, design, and user experience. Over time, you develop enough expertise to confidently handle a full project from blueprint to installation.

Why Join Us?

-- full training and mentorship provided. Opportunity to build foundational knowledge in construction, consulting, and hardware systems. Supportive team culture with clear career growth paths. What We're Looking For:

High school diploma or equivalent

required

.
Post-secondary education in construction, architecture, engineering, or a related field

IS NOT REQUIRED

, however, it is a plus.

Interest in door hardware, security systems, the building industry, commercial construction processes, or construction consulting. Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills. Willingness to follow established processes. Strong collaborative team-oriented mindset. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
