Junior Cultural Ecologist And Project Support

Victoria, BC, Canada

Job Description

We are looking for a full or part-time junior cultural ecologist and project support (flexible 30 to 40 hours per week) based in Victoria, BC with some travel required (reciprocityconnects.ca). Indigenous candidates are especially encouraged to apply. We are looking for a kind, competent, and experienced early-career social or ecological science professional who is happy to work closely with us and Indigenous communities in BC and western Canada, at the grass roots and far, far beyond the Ivory Tower. If this sounds like you, and you like the idea of doing good work with great people, being part of a fun and flexible organization, and putting down roots in the best little city in western Canada, please keep reading.

  • Do you have a degree or two in cultural and ecological anthropology, applied biology, ecology, geography, resource management or similar field, or equivalent education and experience?
  • Are you interested and able to learn and work in subject areas like applied ecology, ethnohistory, anthropology, impact assessment, ecological restoration and community-based research?
  • Do you have 2 or 3 years of experience working with or for Indigenous communities and governments, and/or ecological field work and environmental impact baseline and assessment?
  • Can you work across cultures and with diverse personalities to follow and wisely adapt research methods and protocols, maintaining excellent information management, and finding creative and practical solutions to challenges, both in the field and in the office?
If this still sounds like you, we\'d love to meet you. We are Reciprocity Research, a small, diverse, successful, and very social enterprise based in Victoria, BC. We support Indigenous Nations with professional social and ecological science and technical support. In our spare time, we are growing a majority Indigenous-owned ecological restoration company, and creating an online platform to help decolonize the culture of home, work and private property in Canada and beyond. After 150+ years, we think it\'s about time. We also play floor hockey, surf often, and really love our coffee, our kids, and our dogs. Some days, half our work force seems to be kids and dogs. We aim to be quietly revolutionary. Our new team member must have:
  • Minimum of 2-3 years\xe2\x80\x99 experience working directly with or for Indigenous governments, and/or in a practicing and applied ecological, regulatory or cultural research role, including field studies and environmental assessments.
  • Proven experience and ability to support applied cultural and ecological research teams, including qualitative interviews and focus groups, ecological field work, documentation of baselines, review of scientific reports, and analysis, including development of concrete recommendations and completion of successful reporting.
  • A strong understanding of qualitative and quantitative data management and organization related to audio, video, and spatial datasets (can you keep data organized, and do you know how to organize it?).
  • Open to travel up to 10 days per month as needed for field-related work (it\'s rare we need to travel this much, but important when it\'s needed).
  • Familiarity with Google office programs and Microsoft Office.
Our ideal candidate (should you exist) will also have:
  • Strong understanding of environmental practice and Indigenous rights in BC and internationally.
  • Strong understanding of environmental assessment and impact assessment processes in BC and Canada, with multiple years of proven experience in community-led assessment, mitigation, monitoring, guardianship, and/or adaptive management processes.
  • Strong and applied understanding, and practical experience supporting ecological and/or social science research methods. This should include scoping, planning and conducting community-based field studies; qualitative and quantitative research; consistent research documentation and information management protocols; and ideally with experience in ethnohistoric studies, community-based mapping and GIS, and individual or small group interview facilitation.
  • Expected to work and learn as part of a team with more junior and senior team members, including community co-researchers, across a broad range of community-driven projects.
  • Ability to work across conventional and digital or new media platforms, including preparation of workplans, reports, briefs and summaries, as well as alternate deliverables, including online videos, digital media, and standards designed to support Indigenous management of lands and waters.
  • Ability to balance multiple projects and diverse work tasks including preparing professional reports, coordinating and participating in ecological and cultural field work, and helping with the diverse tasks involved in growing an organization.
  • Ability to prioritize, work effectively and achieve essential work tasks on timelines and in a flexible, creative, and potentially distracting work place.
  • Experience using digital tools, including ESRI apps and social media feeds, and design of simple, effective, and well-supported user interfaces.
  • Ability to effectively manage time, resources and information, including research and financial data, to achieve project goals.
