Jr Administrative Assistant North Slave M\xc3\xa9tis Alliance (NSMA) is an Indigenous organization that represents s.35 Aboriginal rights- bearing Indigenous M\xc3\xa9tis people of the Great Slave Lake area. Our mandate includes the protection of our members\xe2\x80\x99 Aboriginal rights, environment, and cultural heritage. Purpose of the position: We are looking for a responsible and enthusiastic Jr Administrative Assistant to join the NSMA for the summer in-person. We are looking for an individual who is organized, enjoys planning events, and has an interest in archiving. If interested, the Jr Administrative Assistant may also collaborate with the
NSMA Environment Department on field work, environmental monitoring activities, and membership engagement. Please note, the applicant will ideally be between 15-30 years of age and a Canadian citizen, as the intent is to have this position funded by Canada Summer Jobs. Job Type: Summer student or early career worker, full time contract (approx. 4 months at 37.5 hours/week) Location: Yellowknife, NWT Canada (in-person) Wage: $25/hr Availability: Start Date: begins in May, 2023 \xe2\x80\x93 ends in August, 2023 (to be determined with candidate) Typical schedule is 8:30am-5pm Mon-Fri, with occasional overtime or weekend work for field work and events. Responsibilities:

  • Receiving and answering phone calls.
  • Greeting and interacting with visitors at the reception.
  • Assisting with document filings.
  • Assisting with summer community event planning, notably National Aboriginal Day.
  • Assisting with day-to-day operation of the office (e.g. refilling photo-copier, checking fax machine, etc).
  • Interacting with other staff in the office as required.
  • Assisting other office staff in day-to-day tasks, including basic book-keeping.
  • Conduct data compilation, sorting, and analysis of traditional knowledge, land use, maps, and other regulatory information relating to the NSMA traditional territory.
  • Assist in coordinating surveys and other communications to membership (e.g., newsletter, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram posts).
  • Contribute to workplace occupational health and safety.
  • Reporting to the supervisor as required.
Required Qualifications, Education and Experience:
  • Canadian Citizen or Permanent resident between 15-30 years of age.
  • Secondary school diploma.
  • Must have good interpersonal skills and be able to work in a small team.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (MS Excel and MS Word, in particular) and attention to detail with good problem-solving and organizational skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills (including ability to quickly review technical documents and identify the relevant staff for addressing).
  • Physical fitness to lift field/camping gear, participate in site-visits and on-the-land activities.
  • Holds a valid Class 5 or equivalent driver\xe2\x80\x99s license.
Desirable qualifications:
  • Experience working in communications coordination in an administrative role.
  • Fieldwork experience, or similar relevant experience/love for the outdoors (e.g., camping, hiking, canoeing, growing up doing on the land activities).
  • Ability to fly in small aircraft and helicopters, and travel by boat.
  • Physical fitness to lift field/camping gear, participate in site-visits and on-the-land activities.
  • Valid firearms license.
  • Experience driving and maintaining boats, trucks with trailer, and ATVs.
  • First Aid certification (e.g. wilderness or standard first aid).

  • This position reports to the Senior Administrative Assistant.
