Jr. Optical Engineer

Vancouver, BC, CA, Canada

Job Description

Company Overview:

We are a leading innovator in agricultural technology, dedicated to enhancing seed health and viability through our proprietary AI-driven seed sorting system. Our mission is to revolutionize the agricultural industry by providing cutting-edge technology that ensures optimal seed selection and maximizes crop yields.

Role Overview:

We are seeking a highly skilled Optical Engineer to join our dynamic team. The ideal candidate will be our in-house expert on optical systems, responsible for optimizing and improving our existing systems and designing new systems for our commercial high-throughput seed sorter. The optical system must work at very high throughput, rapidly sending acquired data to models for predictions on seed viability, and sorting seeds accordingly. The candidate must be capable of designing robust systems deployable in real-life agricultural environments.

Responsibilities:

Optimize and enhance existing optical systems for seed sorting. Design and develop new optical systems for high-throughput commercial seed sorting applications. Ensure the optical system can handle rapid data acquisition and processing for real-time predictions and sorting. Integrate optical systems with AI models and APIs for seamless operation. Design robust and reliable optical systems capable of functioning in real-world agricultural environments. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure system integration and performance. Stay updated with the latest advancements in optical engineering and implement best practices.

Technical Skills:

Required:

Optical Design and Simulation:

Proficiency in optical design software (e.g., Zemax, Code V, LightTools). Experience with ray tracing, optical tolerancing, and optimization techniques. Ability to design and optimize lenses, mirrors, filters, and other optical components.

Image Acquisition and Processing:

Expertise in image acquisition systems, including high-speed cameras sensors. Knowledge of image processing techniques and software (e.g., OpenCV). Familiarity with signal processing and data analysis.

Programming and Integration:

Proficiency in programming languages such as Python and C++. Experience with API integration and working with AI models. Knowledge of software development best practices, including version control (e.g., Git).

System Design and Prototyping:

Experience in designing robust optical systems for industrial applications. Familiarity with mechanical and electrical engineering principles related to optical system integration. Ability to prototype and test optical systems in field conditions.

Desirable:

Industry-Specific Knowledge:

Understanding of industry standards and regulations related to optical systems in agriculture.

Advanced Techniques:

Familiarity with machine learning and AI applications in optical systems. Knowledge of real-time data processing and analysis.

Additional Engineering Skills:

Understanding of automation and control systems. Experience with hardware-software interfacing and embedded systems. Knowledge of environmental factors affecting optical systems in agriculture.

Qualifications:

- Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in Optical Engineering, Physics, or a related field.

- Minimum of 3 years of experience in optical engineering or a related field.

- Demonstrated experience in designing and implementing optical systems for commercial applications.

What We Offer:
