Position Title: Jr. Head Instructor
Reports to: Program Coordinator
Job Type: Temporary Contract, Summer
Hours: 35 hours per week
Location: Variety Village, Scarborough ON
Rate: $18.75-$19.00 per hour based on experience and qualifications

Summary:
The Junior Head Instructor supports Head Instructors in leading adapted camp programs, ensuring activities are inclusive and tailored to individual participant needs. This role assists with staff supervision, training, evaluations, and daily operations, while modeling best practices and stepping into Head Instructor duties when required. Strong knowledge of disabilities, behaviour strategies, and effective communication are essential for success.#

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Assist Head Instructors in planning and delivering camp activities.

Adapt programming to meet the individual needs of participants with disabilities. Support Camp Coordinator and Supervisors with in-service training sessions. Supervise support staff and 1:1 staff, ensuring they fulfill their responsibilities. Provide feedback to Head Instructors and assist in completing evaluations for instructors and 1:1 staff throughout the summer. Assign volunteers to appropriate roles each week. Lead groups through activities in an organized, inclusive, and engaging manner that keeps participants active and motivated. Provide excellent customer service to families and caregivers by building rapport and effectively communicating about participants' experiences. Assist Head Instructors in holding weekly staff meetings to address group concerns, share teaching strategies, and coordinate program plans. Model positive leadership and professional behavior in interactions with staff, participants, and volunteers. Mentor and support instructors in developing their skills and confidence. Serve as acting Head Instructor when the Head Instructor is on break or temporarily unavailable. Attend weekly staff meetings to stay updated, discuss camper needs, share observations, and collaborate on planning and support strategies. Other duties as assigned to support departmental and organizational needs.


Qualifications and Key Competencies:

Strong knowledge of disabilities and strategies to support participants and manage challenging behaviour.

Experience in integrated programming and adapted sport/recreation. Knowledge of disability awareness, accessibility provisions, and use of adapted equipment. Valid certification in Standard First Aid with CPR-C. Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. Demonstrated leadership abilities and experience supervising staff, co-op students, or volunteers. Previous experience working with individuals with disabilities is an asset. Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks. Dependable, reliable, and professional. Positive, proactive approach to work. Familiarity with facility operations and program schedules to effectively support staff, participants, and families.
