Job Description

A LITTLE ABOUT US

_______________________

We have invested a great deal of time debating, shaping and identifying why we exist as a company and who we are as a team. It is critical to us, even non-negotiable, that new people who join our team are excited and committed to our way of doing business and share specific core values.

Ryfan celebrated it's 45th birthday in 2024, so we are a seasoned and experienced company. However, as we mature we are ready to take our next step forward. Here's what that looks like to us:

Our vision is to transform the MEP construction industry. The industry is ripe for innovation, and we want to move to the frontier of that development.

Our mission is maximizing customer value through relentless process improvement. Process improvement not only delivers cost-savings to our customers, but it enhances their experience with us.

Our passion is building something great. Of course, we deliver exceptional services but we also strive to build great teams, relationships and communities.

Our niche is unconventional projects. Cookie-cutter projects aren't really our market. If a project is weird, innovative, logistically complicated, remote, or any of those, it's probably right in our niche.

Last but never least, there are three "uniques" that make us stand out:

First, we invest in and help create exceptional employees. Not only do we want you to build a career with Ryfan, we want to help you build a great life.

Second, we are leading practitioners of productivity improvement methods, tools and techniques. If there is a better way to do it, we want to be first in. We never tire of making improvements.

Last, we take leading edge construction techniques to unique or underserved markets. We go into markets where our competitors maybe deterred by the challenges. We enjoy success whether others fear risk because we are seasoned and experienced.

OUR VALUES

_______________________

The reality is, we can't achieve our Mission without the right people on board. It is critical to us that every one on the Ryfan team naturally share these core values:

We build community. What we build is not great unless it creates value for the community. The value is larger than the project itself if it incorporates the legacy of our interactions in the communities in which we work and live; includes the way we engage with customers, consultants, other trades and suppliers; encompasses how we teach, learn and grow as a team on-site, in the office and everywhere in between; and involves working to create more winners("more pie for everyone") instead of focusing only on winning ("biggest piece of the pie for us").We embrace abundant thinking and reject a scarcity mentality. We avoid blame or fault-finding and we work relentlessly toward solutions.

We earn trust. Communitiesareformedthroughrelationshipsandrelationshipsarebuiltupona foundation of trust. We strive to earn and be worthy of the faith placed in us by those with whom we work and interact. We do this by saying what we mean, meaning what we say, and doing what we say we are going to do.

We pursue excellence. To earn trust we must be realistic about our capabilities and committed to always sharpening and expanding them. We understand that excellence is not a fixed point, but rather a path or way of doing things. We are steadfast in our pursuit of continuous improvement.

Be fearless. We champion courage to seek out flaws in our methods and push for further enhancements in our performance. We are fearless in our willingness to see ourselves objectively and in our openness to constructive coaching.

We practice discipline. We strive to convert experience into wisdom in a disciplined way. We acquire knowledge from others and incorporate "best practice" or "leading practice" into our work. We share and use our hard-won learning with the rest of our team. In this way we grow, develop and evolve the Ryfan Way.

We celebrate success. We take the time to celebrate our moments of greatness, the instances of excellence, the acquisition of wisdom, the attainment of a bond of trust, and the warmth of community. Celebration is the spark and fuel that rekindles our drive to pursue our passion of building something great.

ALL TRADES, ALL LEVELS

OPERATIONS, ALL LOCATIONS

REPORTS TO

_________________________

All trades report to the project's Field Supervisor. As you move from project to project, your Supervisor will change.

YOUR SQUAD

_________________________

Our projects are located across Canada, often in remote regions of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. Depending on the project requirements and phase of work, your squad may be just you and a Journeyman/Apprentice or crews in the range of 12 people. We are an MEP sub-contractor (mechanical, plumbing and electrical) so your squad may be a mix of trades. Your squad will change with each project based on each person's skill set and the requirements of the project.

All Ryfaners are expected to be "extra hands" to our colleagues. Our teams often travel to remote and isolated locations, so we send the fewest number of people to effectively complete the work. "Not in my job description" is a foreign concept at Ryfan.

ACCOUNTABILITIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

_________________________

Developing a skilled trade is an entrepreneurial opportunity. Some of our Apprentices and Journeymen will choose to go on to run their own businesses, on to other companies, and or to stay with Ryfan. Regardless of your future path, an understanding of both your trade and business operations will set you up for future success. At Ryfan, we are not merely developing strong tradespeople but also strong leaders at all levels.

All trades (Apprentices and Journeymen) fulfill the following accountabilities and responsibilities:

Develop Your Trade Skills

Apprentices actively pursue all learning opportunities. Successful Journeymen at Ryfan are broadly skilled and qualified to work across Canada, so you pursue your exposure to learning opportunities and lean into them with the goal of becoming an effective Red Seal Journeyman in your trade; Apprentices will work under the mentorship and supervision of a Journeyman with increasing independence; You actively pursue the development of your required skills as set out by your registered trade authority as well as qualification to work throughout Canada; Complete your tasks with focus and effort to perform your work to a high standard and in a timely manner; As your experience grows, your level of responsibility and our expectations of you will also proportionately grow; Provide a timely, thorough and accurate report on your daily activities to your Supervisor and office support as requested or required; Using a computer and other communication devices is a basic trade skill of the modern era. You will use a computer or smartphone to enter and retrieve information for your work assignments, safety compliance and daily time entry, among other purposes;

Develop Your Business & Leadership Skills

Develop the skill of direct and calm conversations with everyone. If you have a concern about a colleague, discuss it with that colleague first. Be prepared to help solve it. Your Supervisor is there to coach you if needed, but leaders always attempt to resolve their own issues; Learn about how your daily work contributes to making or losing money, which in turn drives your own prosperity, both in knowledge and compensation; Learn about how your Supervisor and other colleagues manage our scope of work, changes and site issues to deliver a profitable job for Ryfan that also satisfies our clients' expectations and strengthens our relationships; Communicate effectively verbally, in writing and electronically; Comply with Ryfan's "Operating System" (policies, procedures and values) to support effective operations. Provide ongoing feedback for continuous improvement.

Actively Participate in Safety Programs

At the very minimum, comply with all applicable occupational health and safety legislation, codes and guides; Develop a thorough understanding of Ryfan's Health & Safety Management System and provide meaningful feedback to continuously improve its effectiveness; Appropriately use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), safety equipment, supplies and procedures to perform job duties as required; Maintain and use all tools and equipment in a safe manner and support others in using safe work practices. If you use a tool or equipment, return it in better condition than when you took it; Maintain currency of all assigned skills and safety training. If you allow your training to lapse, you will not be scheduled for work.

Like all job descriptions, your accountabilities and responsibilities will evolve over time to support Ryfan's goals, project needs and your individual growth. As a result, you should expect your job description to change from time to time.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION

_________________________

Our Trades possess the following or comparable qualifications, experience and education:

A high school diploma (or equivalent) is a minimum requirement; Valid Canadian driver's license is preferred; Be able to comply with travel requirements (ex. comply with COVID vaccination requirements) so you may travel inter-provincially within Canada, particularly by air, as required by regulators (ex. government); For Apprentices, eligible for registration, or already registered as, an apprentice with a recognized Canadian trade board. For Journeyman, registration as a Journeyman with a recognized Canadian trade board and, ideally, red seal certification.

REQUIRED SKILLS

_________________________

Our Trades possess the following skills:

Flexibility to adjust to shifting circumstances, priorities and deadlines. Our sites have challenging logistics for shipping, travel and accommodations, so you must be willing to roll with whatever comes our way; Ability to learn and use technology daily to fulfill your duties, from reading plans to entering your timesheets; Be highly communicative in order to share site information and an understanding of your needs, but also to help fulfill the needs of your colleagues and other stakeholders.

JOB-SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES

_________________________

In addition to living our Core Values daily, our Trades demonstrate these job-specific competencies:

Achiever: You work hard and possess a great deal of stamina. You take great satisfaction out of being busy and productive. Attention to Detail: You pay attention to every fine detail. You think about what is required in order to achieve the project's outcomes, and ensure it is complete to a high standard; Be Fearless: Fearlessness is a willingness to try something new at the risk of failure (learning). (We call it "innovation"!) Being fearless requires us to accept that we can't accomplish new things if we aren't willing to do new things. Being fearless is being uncomfortable, uncertain, anxious, vulnerable and humble, and moving forward anyways. Fearlessness is not recklessness. When we have trust, it becomes easier to be fearless, and we must be fearless to start building trust. Client Focus: You provide added value through service excellence to our internal and external clients. Problem Solving: You can positively impact the organization and resolve issues without being confrontational. You identify problems and the solutions to them in collaboration with other stakeholders. Timeliness: Deadlines are critical, and you are willing to put in the time and effort necessary to get the work done exceptionally well.

_________________________

This is an hourly paid position compensated in accordance with the Compensation Policy. All trade employees are hired in Alberta but may be temporarily deployed throughout Canada. Due to the unpredictability of travel to remote regions, you are required to have access to a personal credit card in case of urgent or emergent situations.

Different projects have different supplemental compensation. Remote projects may be entitled to Living Out Allowance ($40-75/day) for non-camp days only and/or Travel Allowance ($150/direction).
