Position Summary Working within the Early Childhood Development department the Janitor will be hardworking and detail oriented. The individual will assist with the cleaning and care of our Early Childhood Centre. The Janitor will be responsible for keeping our building clean and presentable for staff, students and families to enjoy. You will perform routine duties and minor building service tasks, including floor care, maintaining cleanliness in all school rooms and washrooms, entrances, and hallways.

What you\xe2\x80\x99ll do Daily Duties: (Include but are not limited to)
  • Open all window blinds
  • Check paper towel dispensers and refill if necessary
  • Check toilet paper dispensers and refill if necessary
  • Check soap dispensers and refill if necessary
  • Remove tarps from the sand boxes and chase away any \xe2\x80\x9ccritters\xe2\x80\x9d like frogs.
  • Sweep all sidewalks and decks outside building
  • Pick up any garbage outside of building
  • Check all garbage\xe2\x80\x99s in the building and empty any that are not done
  • Check all recycling in the building and empty any that are not done
  • Check all organics in the building and empty any that are not done
  • Wash garbage, recycling and organics lids.
  • Flatten any boxes that are extras in the building and take out to recycling
  • Keep doormats clean and straight through building.
  • Keep laundry room tidy and clean

Weekly Duties: (Include but are not limited to)
  • Dust the floorboards through the entire building
  • Wash the windows through the entire building
  • Wash window sills and window tracks
  • Wipe all door handles with soapy water
  • Dust the tops of door frames and window frames
  • Dust the tops of lights
  • Dust the tops of all furniture throughout the building
  • Wipe down surfaces of chairs with soapy water
  • Dust building artifacts (totem pole, paddles, pictures)
  • Wipe kitchen cupboard doors and drawer fronts with soapy water.
  • Wipe down washer and dryer
  • Help unload groceries from the vehicle when the ladies are back from grocery shopping on Friday
  • Water lawns and gardens on the property.
  • Check property for wasp nests and get rid of them as found.

Monthly Duties: (Include but are not limited to)
  • Wash outside of building windows.
  • Check gutters and clear any debris
  • Vacuum all the corners where the walls and floors meet

Annual Duties: (Include but are not limited to)
  • Help with the set-up and take down of any annual events
  • Steam clean the blue chairs

As Needed: (Include but are not limited to)
  • Help other staff load and unload vehicles as needed
  • Clean the large motor room toys
  • Sweep and mop the Large Motor Room floor (move toys and furniture to get all floor space)
  • Help take down and put up climbing wall mats
  • Weed gardens
  • Help with Mill Hall, OOSC and YPP locations as needed
  • Wash decks as needed
  • Wash outside toys as needed
  • Help continue to organize the upstairs storage space and when the organization is complete, help keep it tidy and maintained with daily checks
  • Other duties or responsibilities as assigned by your supervisor, Director, or the CAO

What you bring Education
  • High school degree
  • Familiarity with Material Safety Data Sheets
  • Valid BC Driver\xe2\x80\x99s License, Class 5.
  • WHIMIS
  • First Aid Level 1
  • Satisfactory Vulnerable Criminal Record Check.

Experience
  • Proven working experience as a Janitor.
  • Ability to handle equipment and machinery.
  • Knowledge of cleaning chemicals and supplies.
  • Integrity and ability to work independently.
  • Handle basic maintenance, building repairs, cleaning, and other janitorial work.
  • Knowledge of principles, tools, and techniques of planning and purchasing supplies.
  • Knowledge of general principles of cleaning/sanitization
  • Ability to lift/unload food and supplies weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to operate equipment safely and as per manufacturer\xe2\x80\x99s instructions.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to adhere to Oath of Confidentiality and Seabird Island Band Policies and Procedure.
  • Knowledge and respect of St\xc3\xb3: l\xc5\x8d culture, traditions and language is considered an asset.
  • Experience working with First Nations community is considered an asset.
