We are looking for Engineering Co-op Students to join our Electrical Division for 8-, 12-, and 16-month terms. Positions start in January 2024 in various locations including Edmonton, Calgary, Lloydminster, Whitehorse, and Yellowknife.

Relocation assistance may be provided to the successful candidate.

Co-op Student Requirements (General):

  • Enrollment in a co-op (or internship) program in a recognized Canadian university
  • Excellent computer skills and experience working with the Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing in a clear and concise manner, using appropriate technical vocabulary
  • A valid Class 5 driver\'s license and personal vehicle may be required for some positions.

Note that student selections are taken into consideration in the placement process. Positions are available in, but not limited to, the following engineering departments:



Distribution Design Engineering

Discipline: Electrical, Civil Engineering

Location: Lloydminster

Description:
  • Responsible for design of both bath small and medium size capital projects and system projects on the distribution system.
  • Includes main contact with customer, creating proposals, and select routing.
  • Obtains approvals, selects & orders material, develops design, completes design calculations, and composes Construction Packages.


Distribution System Planning

Discipline: Electrical Engineering

Location: Lloydminster

Description:
  • Supports the planning of ATCO Electric\'s distribution system, for both load and distributed energy resource (DER) interconnections.
  • Responsible for system planning studies for projects and long-term system plans, troubleshooting technical issues from the field, and applying internal and external standards.
  • Develops protection schemes, reviews historical load and generation data, and assists in the implementation of recent technologies.


HVDC & FACTS - Isolated Operations

Discipline: Mechanical Engineering

Location: Edmonton

Description:
  • Provides high-voltage direct current (HVDC) and flexible alternating current transmission systems (FACTS) services spanning project development, management and execution, system implementation, operational readiness, ongoing operations and maintenance including control system upgrades and system integration.
  • Owns and operates two HVDC systems with three converter stations and more than 450 km of HVDC line.
  • Oversees numerous FACTS installations in-house, operating five static var compensators (SVC), three STATCOMs and a synchronous condenser.
  • Develops packaged solutions customized to project\'s needs from concept to commissioning and operates these assets with in-house resources.


Network Connectivity

Discipline: Electrical Engineering

Location: Edmonton

Description:
  • Provide technical support in the maintenance and delivery of real-time operational mapping for the effective operation of the electrical distribution system.
  • Update the network model with new additions to the network by following Engineering Designs and Construction Standards.
  • Resolve connectivity issues that impact operability of the Outage Management System


Northern Development

Discipline: Electrical Engineering

Location: Whitehorse or Yellowknife

Description:
  • ATCO Electric Yukon and Northland Utilities are northern utility services supporting serving over 20,000 customers throughout the Yukon and Northwest Territories.
  • Engineering is responsible for both generation and distribution facilities
  • The system is growing due to electric heat, electric vehicles, and integrating renewable energy sources and this position supports this growth
  • Students will support:
  • Distribution system modelling
  • Load forecasting
  • Performing system protection studies
  • Planning checks on projects (microgeneration, load additions, system performance issues)
  • Driver\'s License Required


Renewables & Microgrids

Discipline: Electrical Engineering

Location: Edmonton

Description:
  • Engineering support of renewables, battery systems and microgrids including design, procurement, implementation, and life cycle support.
  • Markup preliminary and as-built drawing packages as required. Coordinate drawing packages with Graphics, E&I, and other Engineering staff.
  • Provide project management for capital improvements.
  • Update weekly project list for budgeting, forecasting, and cost tracking.


Substation Engineering - Apparatus

Discipline: Electrical Engineering

Location: Edmonton

Description:
  • Perform failure analysis of power systems equipment and provide recommendations on resolution
  • Evaluation of in-service equipment to determine health index to determine long term maintenance plans.
  • Sparing analysis to ensure agile response to emergency outages if they occur.


Survey Geomatics

Discipline: Electrical, Civil, Mechanical Engineering

Location: Lloydminster

Description:
  • Establishes property lines, collects topographic features, and establishing 3rd party crossing and construction/design layout for distribution, transmission, and civil teams.
  • Creates 3rd party crossing drawings and individual ownership plans to support the acquisition of land rights.
  • Creates designed-based drawings showing the collected topographic field data in relation to our existing and new facilities.
  • Driver\'s License Required
