How will you contribute?

Reporting directly to the Senator, and collaborating with a small team of professionals, you will be responsible for important research, strategic analysis and advice, writing, stakeholder management and engagement and committee support in the Senator\'s areas of focus.

The successful applicant will be a versatile and lateral thinker able to transcend different policy subject matter areas across various industries and social services, and able to provide recommendations that can advance the Senator\'s priorities through the legislative process. We are looking for someone with a strong interest in public policy broadly, and the ability to complement the positive energy of our team. The incumbent will also handle assigned correspondence, write recommendations, and draft briefing notes to ensure the Senator is kept apprised of mounting issues. Knowledge of or interest in parliamentary procedure is a plus, as is knowledge of or interest in strategic communications, including media, handling inquiries and contributing to op-eds, and strategic use of social media.

You will be able to quickly grasp and demonstrate a solid understanding of our business fundamentals (purpose, strategy, and reputation), accompanied by the basic skills and concepts needed to understand how the office operates, how different functions relate interdependently, and how your decisions contribute and make a valued difference.

About the Senator

Senator Klyne is a senator from Saskatchewan appointed in 2018. He has a transformational leadership style and is a multi-skilled executive with a broad base of senior management experience in business leadership and strategic direction across a variety of industries including finance, corporate, commercial and retail banking, major daily newspaper publishing in print and on digital platforms, gaming entertainment, and regional mainstream economic development and Indigenous economic development. His policy interests and priorities include net-zero energy and environmental solutions, Indigenous rights and reconciliation, agriculture, trade and commerce, journalism, and financial matters. Senator Klyne currently serves on the following Standing Committees in the Senate: Agriculture and Forestry Committee, the Audit and Oversight Committee, and the Legal and Constitutional Affairs Committee and previously served the National Finance Committee and Banking Trade and Commerce Committee. He is the sponsor of the Jane Goodall Act (Bill S-241), proposing the world\'s strongest legal protection for wild animals in captivity.

Senator Klyne is a member of the Progressive Senate Group (The Progressives), an organization of individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences who share a common set of progressive views and a philosophy grounded in the values of liberty and equality.

Prerequisites

  • Successful completion of a university degree in a field related to the position and/or an acceptable combination of education, training and experience;
  • Experience in researching, analyzing and assessing a broad range of information and making impactful recommendations;
  • Experience in writing documents such as briefing notes, reports, statements, speeches, committee questions and press releases;
  • Experience in providing strategic advice to senior officials on a variety of politically sensitive issues;
  • Experience in developing and maintaining relationships with senior officials and/or parliamentarians and/or stakeholders and/or Indigenous rightsholders;
  • Extensive experience in using the MS-Office suite;
  • Knowledge of communication techniques, methods and practices and the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing;
  • Strategic and organized thinker with the ability to coordinate and multi-task to accomplish a variety of activities with tight timelines.
  • A team player with positive energy;
  • An independent thinker that is not hesitant to consult, conference and collaborate with others;
  • Ability to work in both official languages (English and French) is considered an asset;
  • Parliamentary work experience or a knowledge of the Senate, its policies and the legislative process is considered an asset.
