The Nova Scotia Universities and Colleges are seeking applications from experienced individuals who can conduct Sexual Violence investigations to be placed on a roster to be called upon on an as needed basis. These investigations must be carried out through a trauma-informed lens, recognizing and respecting that all individuals experience and exhibit trauma in unique ways. These investigations will be of a sensitive and private nature that will involve students, staff, faculty and other parties.

Duties and Responsibilities * Interview complainants, respondents, witnesses, and employees to gather facts in order to investigate cases of alleged sexual violence.
  • Conduct investigations using trauma-informed principles and techniques that are procedurally fair and in accordance with campus sexualized violence policies. Conduct site visits and/or online meetings to collect documents and evidence and to perform analysis of documents and evidence collected.
  • Prepare reports of investigation activities conducted.
  • Update and maintain case files and case management records in order to report on the status of investigations.
  • Consult with university or college staff during investigations to advise of progress and any supports parties may require.
Knowledge and/or Skills Required * Experience investigating incidents of sexual violence and interviews of complainants and/or respondents, analyzing and weighing evidence, and writing investigative reports.
  • Knowledge of the effects of sexual violence, particularly from a post-secondary perspective.
  • Experience navigating the post-secondary sector.
  • Knowledge of how to perform a trauma-informed investigation.
  • Excellent judgment and ability to manage highly sensitive and confidential information.
  • Exceptional skills in the areas of conflict resolution, restorative approaches, problem solving techniques, interviewing, and investigation.
  • Exceptional analytical and critical thinking skills to analyze information, assess credibility and weigh evidence.
  • Demonstrated ability to write concise, logical and procedurally sound reports
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple deadlines and work independently while maintaining high levels of organization.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with diverse individuals, including young adults, parents of college or university students, faculty, staff, law enforcement, etc.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Applicants must have attained the following minimum educational qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university or an advanced diploma from an accredited college in the area of social work, law, counselling, human resources or other relevant field (depending on field, should be in good standing with registered licensing body); Masters, PhD, or professional designation from an accredited university in the area of social work, law, counselling, human resources or other relevant field would be considered an asset.
  • Applicants that were a lead or supporting role in at least two sexualized violence investigations would be considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated work experience in social work, counselling particularly in the areas of de-escalation and resolving social/interpersonal issues, human resources, or mediation is considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated work experience in applying federal, provincial or territorial employment, labour, and human rights legislation, regulations or harassment policies is considered an asset.
Additional Information

There is no guarantee that a successful applicant will be retained to carry out an investigation. Whether a successful applicant will be chosen as the investigator in any particular situation will be at the discretion of the University or College involved.

Prior to being retained for a particular investigation, the investigator will be required to execute a specific mandate letter, clear conflicts and declare that there is no reason they are aware of that might reasonably give the appearance of them being biased. Further, an approximate quote is expected before hire and fees payable to investigators will be subject to the schedule of fees assigned by the institution, as may be amended from time to time.
