What you\'ll do

As an investigations officer you will:

  • Use your extensive experience in investigating fatal and serious injuries to conduct preliminary investigations, identify causes, make recommendations, and pursue enforcement actions, up to and including prosecution, if appropriate
  • Participate in the development and implementation of investigation plans, including setting objectives, goals and schedules in accordance with identified priorities
  • Collect, analyze, and organize large amounts of complex and technical information and physical evidence in accordance with recognized court practices
  • Prepare comprehensive written reports
  • Apply relevant sections of the Workers Compensation Act and the Occupational Health and Safety Regulation in a highly visible forum
  • Exercise delegated and statutory authority and/or recommend course of administrative penalties or prosecution
  • Refer serious cases of criminal activity and/or non-compliance for further investigation
  • Prepare and present evidentiary packages to Crown Counsel regarding regulations and investigative procedures
  • Participate in administrative proceedings, coroners inquests, and prosecutorial cases by providing written briefs and testimony as an expert witness regarding facts obtained through personal observation, witness statements, and examination of documentary and physical evidence
  • Make recommendations to promote health and safety awareness and prevent injuries and diseases
  • Present to both internal and external stakeholders on investigations and occupational health and safety issues
Is this a good fit for you?

We\xe2\x80\x99re looking for someone who can:
  • Effectively conduct investigations, interviews and audits using sound judgment and established investigative processes and techniques
  • Develop plans for investigations
  • Compose comprehensive written reports
  • Remain calm and professional when dealing with individuals in traumatic situations
  • Communicate in judicial and/or quasi-judicial proceedings in a professional manner
  • Build positive and effective working relationships
  • Travel on occasion
Your experience and educational background:
  • A post-secondary degree or a post-secondary 2-year diploma in criminology, forensic science, or administrative or criminal law
  • Or, completion of grade 12 and a minimum of 20 post-secondary credits and a minimum of 10 courses related to conducting statutory enforcement investigations
  • A minimum of three years of experience (within the last five years) as an investigator who is part of a major investigation team responsible for conducting serious or complex investigations leading to judicial or quasi-judicial sanctions
  • Experience managing multiple case files concurrently and in a timely manner
  • Experience in major case management is an asset, including experience as a file coordinator
  • Experience in health and safety, construction, forestry, manufacturing, commercial fishing, health care, or oil and gas is an asset
  • Experience in by-law enforcement or inspection and investigation in a regulatory field is an asset
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered
