The primary purpose of this role is to serve as an enthusiastic and knowledgeable Tour Guide, bringing the rich maritime history of the Battle of the Atlantic and the HMCS Sackville to life for visitors. Commissioned in 1941, HMCS Sackville is the last remaining Flower-class corvette and played a crucial role in protecting convoys from German U-boats during World War II. As a Battle of the Atlantic Tour Guide, you will deliver engaging and immersive tours, highlighting the ship's pivotal role in maintaining supply lines and ensuring Allied victory. Visitors will learn about the ship's design, its brave crew, and the harsh conditions they endured at sea. Through your passion and expertise, you will provide a deeper understanding of the sacrifices and resilience demonstrated aboard the Sackville, helping to preserve and promote Canada's naval heritage.
Responsibilities
Develop and maintain an in-depth understanding of the Battle of the Atlantic, its historical significance, and the strategic role played by the Royal Canadian Navy.
Acquire detailed technical and historical knowledge of the HMCS Sackville, including its structure, functions, and wartime operations.
Stay updated on key historical facts, artifacts, and exhibits related to naval history showcased on the ship.
Conduct engaging and informative guided tours for a diverse audience, including students, veterans, tourists, and other community groups.
Tailor the tour experience based on the audience's age, interest level, and background to maximize visitor engagement.
Effectively describe shipboard life, wartime routines, and the operation of critical equipment during the Battle of the Atlantic.
Provide clear explanations of the ship's various compartments, their functions, and the crew's responsibilities during combat.
Actively interact with visitors to enhance their understanding and appreciation of Canada's naval heritage.
Encourage questions and discussions, fostering an interactive and enriching visitor experience.
Participate in and support public-facing events, including memorial ceremonies, historical reenactments, and educational workshops.
Represent the Canadian Naval Memorial Trust in a professional and respectful manner during public events and ceremonies.
Perform any additional tasks as assigned by the supervisor based on organizational needs and priorities.
Experience
Completion of a high school diploma or higher education.
Strong passion for naval history, particularly the Battle of the Atlantic and its significance.
Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills to effectively engage with diverse audiences.
Ability to present historical information in a compelling, accessible, and accurate manner.
