Purpose and General Description: The National Communications Intern will assist the corporate communications team in the Public Affairs & Communications department of the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) with a number of tasks, ranging from researching and writing stories aimed at NCC donors and supporters across the country, along with photo research and archiving, media tracking, and other communications-related activities. Working independently and with NCC staff, the National Communications Intern will assist with planning, research, writing and editing of digital and print publications, particularly for NCC\xe2\x80\x99s blog, website and magazine, as well as other duties as required. This position is a great opportunity for the successful candidate to apply classroom theories and skills to practical and hands-on work. Tasks such as sourcing photos, primary research, writing, editing and proofreading will allow the intern to apply and develop skills that are highly valued in the publishing and communications sectors of the workforce.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assist in researching and writing stories for digital and print publications;
  • Write stories for NCC\xe2\x80\x99s digital and print publications, particularly www.natureconservancy.ca and www.landlines.ca;
  • Assist in photo research and database maintenance and clean-up;
  • Upload images to the NCC image database and tag them appropriately;
  • Where needed, perform interviews of staff or external sources;
  • Assist in sourcing and writing stories for internal publications;
  • Record meeting minutes for various meetings;
  • Contribute to internal projects and materials, such as staff guides, messaging and toolkits;
  • Help with the facilitation of internal events, such as webinars, meetings and calls;
  • Assist the National Public Affairs and Communications team with ongoing activities, as needed.

Required Skills and Attributes:
This posting is targeted to someone possessing the following skills and abilities:
  • Currently registered in a journalism, communications, writing or other relevant college, university or graduate program;
  • Ability to work independently and in team environments;
  • Demonstrated initiative;
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including confidence with journalistic-style interviewing techniques;
  • Excellent writing skills, with a particular aptitude for identifying and telling stories;
  • Experience editing, proofreading and fact-checking;
  • Organized, attention to detail;
  • An interest in nature, conservation and wildlife an asset;
  • Design, multimedia and/or social media skills an asset.
Terms of Employment:
  • $20/hr
  • 37.5 hrs/week
  • This position is 12 weeks months in duration, beginning in June.
  • Location flexible.
