Job Description

The Canadian Light Source Inc. (CLSI) is a national research facility located on the University of Saskatchewan campus. The CLS produces very bright light to explore the nature and structure of molecules, and serves national and international users from academia, industry, and government institutions.
CLSI is now accepting applications to fill a Scientific Accelerator Software Intern position for a sixteen-month term, starting in May 2026 and ending August 2027. The Intern will work within the Accelerator Operations and Development team, contributing to software for our accelerator systems.
Duties will depend on background of the successful candidate, but may include:

  • Implement and support software tools that improve the reliability of machine operation by enhancing diagnostic capabilities and workflow.
  • Integrate and enhance accelerator toolbox functionality to support simulation and generation of machine parameters.
  • Develop standardized libraries for graphical user interfaces and device drivers.
  • Implement robust test suites to improve efficiency and coverage for regression testing.
  • Support accelerator operations and development department activities and other software projects as deemed appropriate.
  • The position involves working closely with the technical staff to develop the requirements to meet scientific and technical needs, and may involve working with consultants or contractors.
Educational qualifications:
  • Successful completion of at least three years of undergraduate study in Computer Science, Physics, Engineering, or a related field for those who wish to return to complete their degree after the internship, or
  • A recent graduate of Computer Science, Physics, Engineering, or a related field
Other qualifications:
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, critical-thinking and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with others and independently.
  • Familiarity with software engineering principles and distributed control systems.
  • Demonstrated experience in some or all the following: object-oriented programming (Python and/or C++), multithreaded programming, Linux, debugging, regression testing, source control (Git), GUI design (Qt), memory optimization, high-performance data structures and algorithms.
  • Experience with MATLAB programming would be considered an asset

Compensation: Current student rates for our intern positions is $50,000 annually.
