JOB TITLE: Intern, Economic Development, Research Analyst

LOCATION: Hybrid Model \xe2\x80\x93 when working onsite, you will report to the location of City Hall.
HOURLY RATE: $17.80

AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY:

Reporting to the Expeditor, you will support research, analysis and data collection for business retention & expansion, investment attraction, marketing and competitive analysis projects that are integral to the Economic Development Office\xe2\x80\x99s focus on increasing jobs and investment.

The position\xe2\x80\x99s primary focus is to assist with the update and maintenance of the business directory. This includes field surveys, phone interviews, research and analysis of business data.

An updated in real time business directory is crucial for:

  • Spatial and data analysis of business information
  • Information supporting Planning and Economic Development initiatives
  • Business outreach and intelligences gathering
  • B2B connections for current and potential businesses
This position will also help the City facilitate opportunities and gage interest for creating new Business Improvement Areas (BIA\xe2\x80\x99s) across the City, so that local businesses leverage their talents and resources to enhance the economic development of an area through promotion, marketing and local improvements
  • Update the Business Directory database by investigating and contacting local businesses, reviewing internal databases, and online research
  • Compile and distribute statistical reports that will include key economic and social performance indicators to assist economic development staff with investment and market enquires
  • Assist with the development and maintenance of Site Selection Tool
  • Analyze business data to create informative reports
  • Liaise with staff from various departments to facilitate information exchange, identify issues and upcoming projects
  • Research and benchmark the role of BIA\xe2\x80\x99s across the Province and Canada for best practices for operating a BIA and how the municipality can play a role
  • Gage interest and solicit feedback from potential BIA participants and identify champions and leaders
  • Facilitate information sharing, consultation meetings, presentations, with interested groups
  • Create profiles of potential BIA\xe2\x80\x99s outlining the characteristics and types of business that might benefit from the creation of a BIA
  • Other similar and related duties as assigned
SELECTION CRITERIA:

EDUCATION:
  • High school (Grade 12) graduation plus working towards an Undergraduate Degree and/or Post-Graduate Degree in Business, Marketing, or post graduate certificate in related field (or equivalent experience).
OTHER SKILLS AND ASSETS:
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Demonstrated proficiency in applications such as MS Office, Database applications, G.I.S. and website content/authoring tools
  • Working knowledge of desktop publishing applications
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills with an emphasis on customer service.
**Preference will be given to students that have a permanent residency in Brampton.
**Various tests and/or exams may be administered as part of the selection criteria.
