Job Description

The Canadian Light Source Inc. (CLSI) is a national research facility located on the University of Saskatchewan campus. The CLS produces very bright light to explore the nature and structure of molecules, and serves national and international users from academia, industry, and government institutions.
CLSI is now accepting applications to fill a Control Systems Developer Intern position for a sixteen-month term, starting in May 2026 and ending August 2027. The Controls Intern will work within the Controls and Instrumentation group, contributing to software for control and feedback systems throughout the facility. This role will include design, implementation and maintenance of a variety of unique systems and will provide an excellent opportunity for a wide range of experience given the specialized technology we use to conduct our research.
Duties:

• Assist senior developers in the development, deployment, and testing of software to meet the scientific goals of the CLS. This includes integrating hardware involved in motion control, system monitoring, and the operation of a variety of scientific equipment.

• Support and maintain existing solutions for accelerator and scientific operations.

• Learn to apply standard procedures to solve problems and refer difficult or unusual problems to senior staff or supervisor for guidance.

• Document software in accordance with CLS standards.

Qualifications:
Successful completion of the third year of a degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Engineering (dual degree), or a related discipline. The expectation is that interns will return to continue their studies after the internship is completed.
Experience Considered an Asset:

• Previous work in a technical environment.

• Familiarity with standard UNIX software development tools.

• Experience with C/C++ and or Python.

• Introductory knowledge of distributed control systems such as EPICS.

Compensation: Current student rates for our intern positions is $50,000 annually.
