Intern - Community Engagement (12 month contract)

Location: City of Toronto (6 months) & Peel Region (6 months)

Metrolinx is connecting communities across the Greater Golden Horseshoe. Metrolinx operates GO Transit and UP Express, as well as the PRESTO fare payment system. We are also building new and improved rapid transit, including GO Expansion, Light Rail Transit routes, and major expansions to Toronto\'s subway system, to get people where they need to go, better, faster and easier. Metrolinx is an agency of the Government of Ontario.

The Metrolinx Intern Program is designed to offer new graduates the opportunity to gain valuable experience by working on projects that guide us forward through our collaborative, inclusive work environment. Upon successful completion of the program, there is the opportunity to be offered a permanent placement.

Our Community Engagement Advisors serve as a liaison to the community, helping to build positive relationships through open, clear and timely communication.

The Community Engagement Intern will have an opportunity to take part in a rotational program across Community Engagement teams located in Peel Region, and the City of Toronto. You will provide support to engagement activities and assist in information requests. You will have the opportunity to lend your critical analysis skills to conduct research on current issues, develop engagement materials, assist with event planning and perform duties such as gathering and organizing data to provide information for divisional projects, reports, and meetings.

What will I be doing?

  • Conduct research and analysis to develop effective relationships with stakeholder groups to help drive Metrolinx\'s public communications efforts.
  • Coordinate reporting and tracking initiatives to support the Community Engagement Department
  • Prepare, collate and distribute meeting materials and assists with facilitating meetings.
  • Coordinate responses to information requests across the team.
  • Provide administrative support to a variety of areas including capturing information from meetings and presentations, minute taking and distribution.
  • Support Community Engagement Advisors and leadership in the development and implementation of community engagement strategies for both capital projects and day to day transit operations
  • Support work to define and clearly communicate Metrolinx\'s key messages related to project plans and construction impacts, including recording information from site visits, stakeholder meetings, interviews, surveys, etc., to investigate and address public concerns and mitigate issues.
  • Support formal consultation by assisting those who arrange and host regular stakeholder meetings (i.e. Construction/Community Liaison Committees), community pop ups and canvasses as well as project tours as required
  • Contribute to issues management by helping to find solutions and mitigations to challenges that can arise with residents and businesses during construction
  • Provide support to those working with various internal and externals stakeholders, including project neighbors (residential and commercial), community partners, and government stakeholders, including the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) to exchange information, execute communications strategies, respond to complaints, analyse information, and execute media and communications plans
What skills & qualifications do I need?
  • Completion of a degree or diploma in Communications, Public Administration, Community Development, Urban Planning, Transportation Planning or related field - or a combination of education, training and experience deemed equivalent.
  • An interest in communications, community engagement, customer service and/or public affairs, with experience executing and communicating informational and promotional material to the public.
  • Must have a valid Ontario Class \xe2\x80\x9cG\xe2\x80\x9d driver\'s license and must meet corporate standard for a good driving record.
  • Complete proficiency in the English language is essential.
  • Proficiency in French or other language is an asset.
  • Proficiency in an additional language is an asset.
  • Familiarity and experience working with the diverse communities that make up the region.
  • Knowledge of customer service, de-escalation techniques and tactics, and issues identification/management.
  • Modern communication techniques and software applications (e.g. desktop publishing, word processing, web-authoring, content creation and operational proficiency with social media)
  • Interpersonal, diplomacy, oral/written communication skills and political acuity
  • Flexible Hours - must be prepared to occasionally work outside of regular working hours during some phases of a project (beyond 5pm during the work week and weekends as required, etc.).
  • Must be available for a June 3rd, 2024 start date and available to work from the following locations: 6 months at 10 Bay Street, Toronto and 6 months at 3024 Hurontario, Mississauga.
