Job Description

Through the National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS), the Government of Canada has embarked on one of the largest procurement projects since the Second World War. The NSS is a nation-building effort to create a sustainable Canadian shipbuilding industry, secure long-term job opportunities and build the next generation of ships for the Canadian Coast Guard and Royal Canadian Navy. Through its NSS-related work, Seaspan Shipyards is owning the redevelopment of our domestic shipbuilding industry on the West Coast and delivering on the promise of ships built in Canada, by Canadians.


Seaspan's Innovation team is actively developing several technology areas including Additive Manufacturing (AM), rapid technology insertion, model sustainment, autonomy, digital twins and green technologies in support of use cases for future vessels, engineering services, and in-service support. Our innovation program includes current and planned projects seeking scalable solutions that integrate emerging technologies using real-time sensors, 3D spatial information, and visualization technologies to improve Seaspan's shipbuilding and refit business.


The Intern, Additive Manufacturing will be responsible for providing day-to-day support to managers, engineers, specialists and production staff while assisting and coordinating specific activities. The Innovation Team is leading a growing Additive Manufacturing (AM) capability within Seaspan to leverage 3D printing and other AM processes to support ship design, fabrication, repair and maintenance. Our AM initiatives focus on applying emerging technologies to produce prototypes, functional components, and tooling, while integrating design, material, and process knowledge across the organization. Through innovative design, hands-on experimentation, process validation, and collaboration with cross-functional teams, AM enables rapid iteration, cost-effective production, and sustainable manufacturing solutions. These efforts are helping Seaspan advance its AM readiness and integrate AM into broader workflows to improve vessel performance, fabrication efficiency, and operational flexibility. This is an exciting opportunity to be at the forefront of this modernization of ship building including developing AM solutions as well as increasing awareness and adoption within Seaspan.


Note: Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at 2 Pemberton Avenue, North Vancouver.



What you'll do



Support the AM team to achieve milestones and objectives that enhance Seaspan's AM capabilities, developing, evaluating and implementing novel applications, processes and business cases through prototyping and delivery of pilot projects. Develop, implement and rapidly deploy successfully validated AM processes to support and deliver requests from across the business and departments including specification determination, concept design, design reviews, modelling, prototyping and optimization, market research, cost estimates and supplier quotes. Develop relationships and collaborate with various stakeholders including process owners, end users and external partners and suppliers. Leverage engineering knowledge and 3D modelling skills to create AM content, providing models, design work and physical components to solve business needs. Document and share activities through internal and external presentations. Support the operation, procurement and maintenance of all AM equipment, ancillaries and materials - current and future. As an innovation project, other to-be-determined activities will be encouraged based on the skillset and interest of the applicant.

What you'll bring



Enrollment in a second or later year of an Engineering, Sciences, Applied Sciences or similar degree, preferably in Mechanical, Mechatronics, Manufacturing, Materials, or similar disciplines that develop, modify and utilize 3D CAD models and Engineering principles. Strong interest in Additive Manufacturing, 3D printing, design, R&D, and innovative solutions in a heavy manufacturing or marine environment. Experience with 3D printing, design for AM, or AM processes, materials, and equipment would be an asset. Experience in conducting technical investigations and technical report writing would be an asset. Experience 3D Modelling including Fusion360 would be an asset. Experience with mechanical/marine systems or other engineering/manufacturing systems would be an asset. Excellent computer skills including Excel/Word/PowerPoint. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and manage time effectively. Excellent time management skills with a focus on meeting and exceeding timelines. Strong written and verbal communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.

We require a full-time commitment Monday-Friday, 40 hours per week with an hourly rate of $26.00/hour.
