*The Satellite Operations Engineer can expect to be available in an on-call role (typically one week out of every four).

This position is for a job located at the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) in St Hubert, Montreal, QC.*

MDA operates the three satellites from the RADARSAT Constellation Mission (RCM) as well as the RADARSAT-2 Satellite, all being SAR remote sensing satellites, from its control center at St. Hubert, near Montr\xc3\xa9al, Qu\xc3\xa9bec. The Systems comprise Satellites (4 total) in Low-Earth (Polar Sun-synchronous) Orbit and Ground Segments for order handling, planning, and satellite control, and for SAR data reception, processing and distribution, archiving, cataloguing, and image quality maintenance. System operations are undertaken by MDA and through internal and subcontractor service contract arrangements.

The Satellite Operations Engineering group in St Hubert is providing engineering services to the satellite operation: provides cross ground segment system engineering, operational monitoring and reporting, overlooking the evolution of the ground segment system, and support operation build up. The Satellite Operations Engineering group provide cross-domain expertise to the operation of ground segment components while focusing on the interconnection between various ground and space systems. Staff member of this group intervenes to troubleshoot and fix system problems across the operational systems as well as support new development to improve system efficiency and reliability.

Job Responsibilities:

The Satellite Operations Engineer will:

  • Actively participate and lead the resolution of Ground Segment (GS) anomalies ensuring the highest level of system uptime possible
  • Monitor and report system performance against defined metrics through aggregated statistics collected from the GS;
  • Support the definition of operations concepts, the development and/or review of automated procedures;
  • Develop and/or maintain tools, scripts, applications to improve the operations of the GS
  • Coordination of system modifications, including their documentation, testing, approval, and implementation
  • Maintain or review operations procedures and other operational tools;
  • Communicate with and provide support to the operations staff; represent MDA in a Canadian Government setting.
  • Manage Mission Planning specific activities (e.g. Support for Emergency acquisition handling, Manual conflict resolution, and Handling of Satellite anomaly from planning perspective\xe2\x80\xa6).
  • Optimize the use of satellite resources while striving to achieve major stakeholders such as CSA, Canadian Ice Service (CIS), Dept of National Defence (DND), ESA Copernicus satisfaction.
Job Requirements (experience/skills):
  • Degree of higher degree in numerate discipline, preferably in the areas of GIS, aerospace, engineering, computer science or physics. Post graduate degree in other Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields will also be considered;
  • At least 2 years post graduate experience in an operations environment, or systems development preferably with exposure to spacecraft operations;
  • Strong computer skills, including software development, scripting (Python, PowerShell, Bash, JavaScript), and Windows / Linux system administration;
  • Experience with database systems (MS SQL server, PostGres/PostGIS, Mongo DB), networking, DevOps, and IT automation software (SaltStack, Puppet) is also an asset;
  • A flexible team player, with agility to work in a multi-disciplinary environment;
  • Good verbal and written communication skills; Working language is in English;
  • Willingness to be included in overnight and weekend "on-call" rotation to support anomaly decision and resolution process.

The Operation Systems Engineer will work as part of the MDA team at the MDA Control Centre, St. Hubert, Quebec.

The candidate must be well organized and focused on priorities. He/she should be able to extract information from a vast source of documentation and to demonstrate initiative and leadership.

The candidate needs to be able to qualify for a Secret security clearance level.

Le groupe d\'ing\xc3\xa9nierie d\xe2\x80\x99exploitation de satellites de Saint-Hubert fournit des services d\'ing\xc3\xa9nierie pour les op\xc3\xa9rations satellitaires : il assure l\'ing\xc3\xa9nierie des syst\xc3\xa8mes du segment terrestre, la surveillance op\xc3\xa9rationnelle et l\'\xc3\xa9tablissement de rapports, le suivi de l\'\xc3\xa9volution du syst\xc3\xa8me du segment terrestre et le soutien \xc3\xa0 la mise en place des op\xc3\xa9rations. Le groupe d\'ing\xc3\xa9nierie des op\xc3\xa9rations satellitaires fournit une expertise interdomaine pour l\'exploitation des composants du segment terrestre tout en se concentrant sur l\'interconnexion entre les diff\xc3\xa9rents syst\xc3\xa8mes terrestres et spatiaux. Responsabilit\xc3\xa9s :

L\'ing\xc3\xa9nieur d\'exploitation de satellites devra :
  • Participer activement et diriger la r\xc3\xa9solution des anomalies du segment sol afin d\'assurer le plus haut niveau possible de disponibilit\xc3\xa9 du syst\xc3\xa8me.
  • Contr\xc3\xb4ler et rapporter les performances du syst\xc3\xa8me par rapport \xc3\xa0 des param\xc3\xa8tres d\xc3\xa9finis gr\xc3\xa2ce \xc3\xa0 des statistiques agr\xc3\xa9g\xc3\xa9es recueillis \xc3\xa0 partir du segment terrestre ;
  • Contribuer \xc3\xa0 la d\xc3\xa9finition des concepts op\xc3\xa9rationnels, \xc3\xa0 l\'\xc3\xa9laboration ou \xc3\xa0 l\'examen des proc\xc3\xa9dures automatis\xc3\xa9es;
  • \xc3\x89laborer ou maintenir des outils, des scripts, des applications pour am\xc3\xa9liorer les op\xc3\xa9rations du segment sol.
  • Coordonner les modifications du syst\xc3\xa8me, y compris la documentation, les essais, l\'approbation et la mise en \xc5\x93uvre de ces modifications
  • Maintenir ou revoir les proc\xc3\xa9dures d\'exploitation et autres outils op\xc3\xa9rationnels;
  • Communiquer avec le personnel charg\xc3\xa9 des op\xc3\xa9rations et lui apporter un soutien; repr\xc3\xa9senter MDA dans le cadre des activit\xc3\xa9s du gouvernement canadien.
  • G\xc3\xa9rer les activit\xc3\xa9s sp\xc3\xa9cifiques \xc3\xa0 la planification de la mission (par exemple, soutien \xc3\xa0 la gestion des acquisitions d\'urgence, r\xc3\xa9solution manuelle des conflits, traitement des anomalies des satellites du point de vue de la planification...).
  • Optimiser l\'utilisation des ressources satellitaires tout en s\'effor\xc3\xa7ant de satisfaire les principaux intervenants tels que l\'ASC, le Service canadien des glaces (SCG), le minist\xc3\xa8re de la D\xc3\xa9fense nationale (MDN) et le programme Copernicus de l\'ASE.
Exigences (exp\xc3\xa9rience/comp\xc3\xa9tences) :
  • Dipl\xc3\xb4me sup\xc3\xa9rieur dans une discipline num\xc3\xa9rique, de pr\xc3\xa9f\xc3\xa9rence dans les domaines des GIS, de l\'a\xc3\xa9rospatiale, de l\'ing\xc3\xa9nierie, de l\'informatique ou de la physique. Un dipl\xc3\xb4me d\'\xc3\xa9tudes sup\xc3\xa9rieures dans d\'autres domaines des sciences, de la technologie, de l\'ing\xc3\xa9nierie et des math\xc3\xa9matiques (STIM) sera \xc3\xa9galement pris en consid\xc3\xa9ration;
  • Au moins deux ans d\'exp\xc3\xa9rience postuniversitaire dans un environnement op\xc3\xa9rationnel ou dans le d\xc3\xa9veloppement de syst\xc3\xa8mes, de pr\xc3\xa9f\xc3\xa9rence avec une exposition aux op\xc3\xa9rations satellitaires;
  • Excellentes comp\xc3\xa9tences en informatique, notamment en d\xc3\xa9veloppement de logiciels, en \xc3\xa9criture de scripts (Python, PowerShell, Bash, JavaScript) et en administration de syst\xc3\xa8mes Windows/Linux;
  • Une exp\xc3\xa9rience des syst\xc3\xa8mes de base de donn\xc3\xa9es (MS SQL server, PostGres/PostGIS, Mongo DB), de la mise en r\xc3\xa9seau, du DevOps et des logiciels d\'automatisation informatique (SaltStack, Puppet) est \xc3\xa9galement un atout;
