THE OPPORTUNITY
We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Intermediate Personal Lines Underwriter to join our underwriting team. This role is responsible for assessing and evaluating personal lines insurance applications, renewals, and endorsements in accordance with underwriting guidelines, company standards, and regulatory requirements. The successful candidate will work
collaboration with the Personal Lines Team to build and maintain a book of business while upholding our reputation of offering exceptional insurance experiences to our Brokers, Agents, and Members.
Key Responsibilities
Review, evaluate, and underwrite new business, renewals, and policy changes for personal lines products (home, auto, condo, tenants, etc.).
Apply underwriting guidelines, risk appetite, and pricing strategies to ensure profitable portfolio growth.
Analyze client risk profiles using a combination of documentation, reports, and available data sources.
Collaborate with our distribution partners and internal stakeholders to clarify information, negotiate terms, and provide exceptional service.
Balance underwriting authority and referral requirements; escalate complex risks as needed.
Contribute to portfolio management by monitoring risk exposure, loss ratios, and growth opportunities within personal lines.
Maintain awareness of market trends, competitor strategies, and regulatory changes impacting personal lines underwriting.
Provide mentorship and technical guidance to underwriting assistants where needed.
Ensure compliance with internal policies, industry regulations, and company standards.
Contribute to process improvements, systems testing, and efficiency initiatives within the underwriting team.
Qualifications
Post-secondary degree/diploma in Business, Insurance, or related field.
Working towards or completion of CIP (Chartered Insurance Professional) designation preferred.
3-5 years of underwriting experience in personal lines insurance with progressively increasing responsibilities.
Solid knowledge of personal lines products, risk assessment, and underwriting practices. Strong analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving abilities. Excellent communication and relationship-management skills, particularly with brokers/agents. Proficiency in policy administration and underwriting systems; comfortable with digital tools and data analysis. Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment while maintaining service standards.
