Canada Fluorspar (NL) Inc. offers an exciting and challenging opportunity for an individual to join its Mining Operations Team as a full-time Intermediate Mine Planning Engineer. We are seeking an experienced and safety-focused professional to plan and facilitate the open pit operations to achieve and surpass the production targets. This position will work closely with the open pit mining contractor.
This position plays a key leadership role in ensuring the mine plan is executed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with CFI's operational, environmental, and safety standards.
Reporting to the Mine Manager, the successful candidate will be responsible for coordinating and developing mine plans from short-range to strategic time horizons. The role ensures that all plans are operationally feasible, cost-effective, safe, and compliant with all regulatory requirements. Key responsibilities include:
Duties / Responsibilities
Develop short-range, medium-range, and strategic mine plans, ensuring alignment with production targets, equipment capability, and long-term mine strategy.
Prepare weekly, monthly, and quarterly mine plans, including drill-and-blast designs, ore control plans, haulage plans, and waste dump scheduling.
Optimize mine designs (pits, phases, ramps, dumps, stockpiles) to improve productivity, reduce operating costs, and maximize ore recovery.
Responsible for improving mine planning processes, developing mine plans and dump schedules, identification of mine plans risks and opportunities.
Collaborate with operations teams (drill/blast, loading, hauling, geology, survey, maintenance) to ensure plans are practical, clearly communicated, and achievable.
Conduct pit optimization, sequencing, and scheduling using mine planning software (e.g., Whittle, Datamine, RPM Mine Planner, Surpac, or equivalent).
Integrate geotechnical, hydrology, environmental, and regulatory requirements into all mine designs and schedules.
Monitor daily and weekly production performance, identify variances from plan, and recommend corrective actions.
Prepare and update pit designs, including pushbacks, berms, benches, ramp gradients, and safety setbacks in compliance with mine standards and provincial regulations.
Support drill and blast planning, including drill patterns, charge layouts, timing, fragmentation targets, and reconciliation.
Update and maintain mining databases, block models, topographical surfaces, and design files.
Participate in reconciliation processes, comparing planned vs. actual production, fragmentation, ore grade, and material movements.
Perform scenario analysis and what-if studies to evaluate equipment changes, productivity improvements, or operational constraints.
Prepare technical reports, maps, and presentations for management, internal teams, and external stakeholders.
Ensure all mine planning activities support safe operations, including adherence to ground control plans and regulatory standards.
Assist with long-term planning, life-of-mine design updates, budgeting, and capital planning as required.
Produce budget physicals and costs for anticipated for annual and 3-year production in cooperation with other departments.
Identify and participate in the implementation of continuous improvement opportunities for all aspects of the mine operation.
Provide mentorship, coaching, direction, supervision and guidance to Mine Techs, and EITs while ensuring that performance management including the need for discipline, if necessary, is maintained on a regular basis.
Education / Experience / Skill
A Bachelor's degree in Mining Engineering or similar field.
6+ years of experience in progressively responsible engineering role in an open pit environment. Underground mining experience is a plus.
Professional Engineering designation or be eligible to register as a Professional Engineer within 6 months in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Proficiency with relevant software programs (i.e. Datamine Studio OP, Geovia Surpac, RPM Mine Planner Scheduler, Whittle, Datamine NPV, PowerBI, etc.)
Strong proficiency in MS suite, specifically Excel
Supervising: 2 years (preferred)
Preference will be given to candidates with proficiency in Open pit optimization, Data Analytics and Financial modelling.
Valid driver's license and ability to work on a rotational schedule (e.g., 7days on/ 7 days off, 14 days on / 14 days off).
