Position Overview
As an Intermediate Mechanical Engineer, you will support Lead Designers and Project Engineers in all phases of the design process, while independently completing assignments. This role requires strong technical design skills, proactive project coordination, and the ability to contribute to design reviews and quality assurance.
Key Responsibilities
Design Planning & Project Support
Assist in developing design plans, scopes, deliverables, and level-of-detail expectations.
Research applicable standards, regulations, and technical requirements for project execution.
Contribute to technical assessments, resource allocation, and design feasibility reviews.
Plan and organize personal workload to meet project timelines and proactively flag potential risks or scheduling challenges.
Support identification and documentation of scope adjustments and design changes.
Design Execution & Technical Competence
Translate specifications into manufacturable designs, applying sound engineering methodologies (e.g., shaft analysis, frame analysis, FEA, free body diagrams).
Develop conceptual and detailed designs that meet functionality, performance, and fit-for-purpose requirements.
Optimize designs for manufacturability, considering machining, fabrication, and assembly processes.
Perform engineering analyses, calculations, and material selections with appropriate tolerances.
Create accurate 3D models and detailed drawings in compliance with Inventor and internal drawing standards.
Track progress on assigned tasks, maintain revision control, and ensure all design changes follow the approval process.
Engineering Quality
Actively participate in internal and external design reviews.
Complete required peer reviews and provide constructive technical feedback to colleagues.
Verify accuracy of models, drawings, and spreadsheets to ensure high-quality deliverables.
Project Management & Communication
Report progress on assigned tasks and communicate delays or technical challenges early.
Maintain professional presentation of deliverables for client and external distribution.
Facilitate clear and effective communication within the project team.
Independently represent Rockford in technical or project-related discussions when required.
Build Support, Testing & Commissioning
Support the development of Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs), Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), and commissioning plans.
Provide plant and site support, answering questions on design intent and manufacturability.
Assist during installation and commissioning to troubleshoot issues, verify correct installation, and ensure as-built accuracy.
Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical or Industrial Systems Engineering.
Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation with APEGS or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) actively pursuing licensure.
6+ years of mechanical or industrial systems engineering experience in industrial equipment or machine design.
Strong knowledge of engineering design tools, methodologies, and project management practices.
Proficiency with Autodesk Inventor (or similar CAD software) and familiarity with FEA.
Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
Valid class 5 driver's license.
