Position Overview:



Carbon Lock Tech, a developer of biomass pyrolysis systems for biochar production and carbon dioxide removal, is seeking an Intermediate Mechanical Engineer to join our growing engineering team. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to innovative clean technology solutions that address climate change. Based in Manitoba, you will work on the design, development, and optimization of pyrolysis reactor systems and associated equipment, collaborating with our experienced engineering team to bring cutting-edge thermal processing technology from concept to commercial deployment. The company is also focusing its engineering work on developing the next version of the reactor technology and the setting up of a commercial-demonstration facility.

Key Responsibilities:



Design and optimize mechanical components and systems for pyrolysis reactors, including vessel design, heat transfer systems, and material handling equipment. Develop detailed engineering drawings and specifications using CAD software (OnShape or equivalent)
Hands-on operation of equipment that pyrolyzes biomass, with associated subsystems for liquid/gas separation, combustion, heat transfer and cooling.

Familiarity with PLC programming, electrical wiring, instrument integration and component communications (ie. ethernet, serial). Perform thermal and structural analysis, with attention to heat transfer for packed-bed systems, thermal expansion and thermal stresses under loads. Working with fabricators ensure quality workmanship, ensuring delivery of designed equipment to site, equipment installation and commissioning. Conduct equipment sizing and scale-up calculations for R&D, pilot and commercial-scale systems. Collaborate with the engineering team on prototyping, testing, and system optimization. Document engineering work, test results, and lessons learned.

Required Skills and Qualifications:



Bachelor's or master's degree in mechanical or mechatronics engineering, or mechanical engineering technology from a Canadian recognized university or college, that satisfies the job skills and responsibilities. Registered as a Professional Engineer, or working towards designation. 3-5 years of experience, preferably in pyrolysis, gasification, thermal conversion technologies or relevant oil and gas industries. Proven experience designing processing systems; experience designing reactors or thermal processing systems is an asset. Strong understanding of fundamental engineering concepts in particular fluids, heat transfer, thermodynamics. Experience and comfort using tools and working with your hands. Experience scaling up "hard tech" from the laboratory to commercial scale, or some stage in-between. Experience working in a start-up environment or small company with the ability to pivot as needed, utilize "out of the box thinking" and the determination to solve any problem. Strong data analysis, reporting and communication (written/verbal) required. Adhere to safety norms, and ability to wear personal protective equipment as required. Proven track record for determination, motivation and hard work, especially in an environment where you will be required to perform many different jobs or roles simultaneously.

Pay: $75,000.00-$82,000.00 per year
