Trans Mountain Corporation operates Canada's only pipeline system transporting oil products to the West Coast. The Intermediate Materials Engineer will provide technical support across the company on complex materials-based issues. This role will support material traceability and management of Trans Mountain assets, material testing, and related fitness-for-service engineering assessment. Additionally, this role will also assist the development and continual assessment of Asset Integrity's Pipeline Integrity Threat Summary (PiTS).



This role is classified as "Office First" under the company's Where We Work policy, and the successful incumbent will work full-time out of the company's Calgary office. This position reports to the Lead Materials Engineer.

Key Responsibilities:


Provide technical guidance and support across the company on metallurgical and materials engineering topics, utilizing specialized knowledge to conduct or assist with materials testing, materials traceability and quality control, fit-for-service engineering assessment. Perform technical review of the turnover record from pipeline construction, including but not limited to pipe MTRs, coating inspection records, bend information package, mainline valve information, hydrotesting records. Perform review of records input in the material traceability/ management database. Support building and maintenance of materials properties database for pipeline system. Manage Trans Mountain's routine material testing projects, including feature testing, material testing, toughness testing, by selecting service providers, negotiating Scopes of Work and associated costs. Draft various engineering assessments as request, including fitness-for-service assessments for metal loss, dent crack features, pipeline assessment. Support the development and continual assessment of Asset Integrity's Pipeline Integrity Threat Summary (PiTS). Support Trans Mountain's technical regulatory responses by providing subject matter expert response, ensuring compliance, and addressing complex technical matters with precision and professionalism. Support Trans Mountain's contribute to Joint Industry Projects and actively engage with external industry associations and workgroups to drive advancements, enhance efficiencies, and expand knowledge across the company and the broader industry. Support the review of third-party technical reports by engaging with their authors to clarify findings, address ambiguities, and refine the reports for improved quality and alignment with project requirements on material related issues.


Professional Experience and Qualifications:


Minimal Bachelor's degree in Materials or Mechanical Engineering. Over 4 years of engineering experience in a related field. Professional Engineer (P. Eng) designation and registration with APEGA. E.I.T. with exceptional experiences, or higher education may be considered. Professional Knowledge: + Proven ability in materials science and engineering, specifically for pipeline steel.
+ Strong background in materials testing and pipeline integrity.
+ Familiarity of materials requirements specified in CSA Z245 series, and Z662.
+ Materials toughness testing methods.
+ Fracture mechanics and its application in fitness-for-service assessment.
+ Burst pressure assessment using modified Ln-Sec, API 579, MAT-8, mB31g, KAPA, etc.
+ FEA simulation experience is preferred.
+ Steel making process, pipe mill, coating application for both modern and vintage pipes.
+ Knowledge in risk assessment; internal pipeline inspection; crack, deformation, and metal loss assessments; chemical treatments; maintenance pigging; welding; and cathodic protection.
Competency in Excel and its VBA would be beneficial. Excellent communication (both written and verbal) and interpersonal skills, with the ability to foster teamwork within the Engineering department and across. Exceptional analytical and prioritization skills. Critical focus on accuracy and detail and work efficiently in a time-conscious and time-effective manner in a high-paced, agile, dynamic and multi-task environment.

May need to provide support outside of regular business hours and/or on the weekend. 5-10% travel to various site locations may be required.
