Equilibrium is a multidisciplinary firm specializing in the reduction of contaminated site environmental liability through a more thorough understanding of human health and ecological risks and the application of standard and non-standard remediation and reclamation techniques. We provide support to various clients throughout Western Canada and internationally in areas of: risk assessment and risk management, Phase 1, 2, and 3 investigations, standard remediation and reclamation approaches, as well as advanced remediation technology implementation. We are also actively engaged in research activities, funded by industries and provincial/federal governments, to better understand relationships between substances encountered in the environment and associated adverse effects on human and ecological health. Equilibrium has spearheaded numerous innovative regulatory guideline updates and tools, including creating the Subsoil Salinity Tool (SST) which provides a standardized approach for assessing and remediating salt contamination.

Position Summary:



The position is based out of either the head-office in Calgary, AB (hybrid), or out of Edmonton or Lloydminster (remote). It involves a primary focus on field work in various areas across Alberta and Saskatchewan. The position title is Intermediate Environmental Soil and Groundwater Investigation Specialist.

The successful team member will be responsible for:

participating in the Equilibrium safety program;

coordinating, managing, and executing field programs including Phase 1, Phase 2, and Phase 3 Environmental Site Assessments as well as groundwater characterization, with a focus on drilling and remediation activities,

o learning and applying investigation strategies that generate data to support risk assessment studies and risk-based remediation guidelines,

o field work to comprise approximately 25-40% of the total time

completing all aspects of ground disturbance for field programs including planning stages prior to the program, leading the field program, and coordinating third party contractors;

tracking field data and information, providing accurate daily cost updates and other client requirements;

completing analytical data validation and Quality Assurance/Quality Control,

writing technical reports on Phase 1, Phase 2, and Phase 3 activities, drill program plans, and data gap and remedial action plan documents,

applying relevant Tier 1, Tier 2, and/or Tier 3 (also referred to as site-specific risk assessment) regulatory soil and groundwater guidelines, assessing exceedances, learning how to develop Tier 2 guidelines (guideline modification, Subsoil Salinity Tool (SST), etc.), and advancing professional knowledge in other risk assessment techniques;

opportunities to be involved with novel in-situ remediation projects;

opportunities to learn and implement advanced SST techniques for challenging, complex sites;

training and mentoring of junior field staff; and,

working successfully as part of a multi-disciplinary team, in the field, and in the office.

Qualifications:



The candidate will have a minimum of 5 years of experience in leading environmental investigation and remediation field programs, including all aspects of ground disturbance. The individual may have prior experience with developing Tier 2 soil and groundwater remediation guidelines, which is considered a strong asset for the position. The candidate must have an eagerness to work in a dynamic, social, multidisciplinary team, with an enthusiastic attitude as well as strong verbal and written communication skills. Applicants must be willing and able to travel for a significant portion of the year and perform mentally and physically demanding tasks in a safe work environment. Typical field programs range up to a maximum of approximately 14 days consecutively, after which breaks from field work are scheduled.

A degree or diploma in a field such as environmental science, soil science, engineering, hydrogeology, geology, or agrology is required. A masters degree would be considered a strong asset, as would a strong spatial reasoning ability and interest in learning risk assessment techniques. The ability to provide professional sign-off on Phase 1, 2, and 3 reports is a competitive edge, such as being registered as a Professional Agrologist, Registered Technologist in Agrology, Professional Engineer, Certified Engineering Technologist, Professional Geologist or Hydrogeologist, Professional Biologist, or Environmental Professional. Strong candidates without a professional designation will be considered as field competency, efficiency, ethics, and safety are the most important job requirements. Formal experience with First Nations cultures, practices, and environmental stewardship is considered an asset.
