What you'll do
The Substations Growth and Sustainment Department (SGS) is responsible for planning, managing and sustaining more
than 300 BC Hydro substations, i.e. providing planning and engineering expertise, developing business cases for all new
substations, upgrades, expansions and substation equipment programs, creating strategic plans for the replacement /
refurbishment /maintenance of substation equipment, for all high voltage/medium voltage, transmission and distribution
substations. We currently have a challenging and exciting opportunity for two Intermediate Engineers in the department.
Successful applicant will be offered a position commensurate with their level of experience.
Specific Duties:
Engages in the engineering of electrical utility systems and develops specialized expertise in the planning of transmission/
distribution substations.
Prepare long-term plans of the major and very complex new/existing substations.
Conducts and analyzes technical and economic planning studies related to the expansion of BC Hydro's electric system,
including determining stations configurations, station capacities, voltage control, comparing system reinforcement
alternatives, and specifying performance requirements for selected system reinforcement.
Investigates, analyzes, and solves a variety of complex and unique engineering problems related to new and existing
stations.
Develops innovative engineering techniques, new approaches and applies existing criteria in novel ways in the planning of
new substations and for new generation and load interconnections.
Specifies major stations' high voltage electrical equipment like power transformers, circuit breakers, shunt and series
reactors/ capacitors etc.
Develops asset plans relating to maintenance and replacement of major equipment.
Contributes to the overall development and implementation of Asset Management strategies and policies.
Conducts load and generation interconnection system impact studies and writes reports.
Imparts engineering knowledge and encourages the professional development of junior engineers. Develops and
maintains effective professional relationships with internal and external stakeholders to accomplish department's objectives.
Manages multiple projects, initiates studies, develops business cases, assesses priorities and risks, monitors work to
ensure it meets applicable engineering standards and business requirements.
Collaborates with Transmission and Distribution Planning, Engineering, Field Operations, Project Delivery and
Transmission and Distribution system Operations to develop optimized plans, implement the substations projects and
support the system operation.
Makes contribution to the yearly capital plan process, Integrated Resource Plans and Revenue Requirements Application.
What you bring
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering recognized by Canadian Universities. A Master's degree or higher in a
relevant field is an asset.
Minimum of four (4) years of experience in a relevant field ideally in an electricity utility. Applicants who do not meet the
full qualifications or those with lesser work experience may be considered for a lower level position.
Registered, or eligible for immediate registration, as a Professional Engineer with Engineers and Geoscientists of BC
(EGBC). Some experience in planning and/or design of high voltage substations.
Some experience in operation and maintenance would be an added asset.
Some technical knowledge in planning of electric utility power systems up to 500 kV.
Some knowledge of major substation equipment, such as power transformers, circuit breakers, shunt reactors/capacitors
instrument transformers and their specifications and applications are desirable.
Knowledge of relevant CSA, IEC and IEEE standards applied to equipment specification and application guides.
Well-developed verbal and written communication, presentation and leadership skills.
Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
Experience with Asset Management (ISO 55000) policies, strategies, and standards, for asset planning is a benefit.
Knowledge of transmission system analysis is an asset.
