Bear Tracks Environmental Services (2015) Ltd. is seeking a permanent intermediate ecologist to join our fast-growing team in Lethbridge, AB.Founded as a biological consulting firm in 2006, Bear Tracks' experience portfolio has since grown to include an array of environmental consulting services, allowing us to meet the various needs of our industry and government clientele.Wanting to be part of a vibrant team is a must. We take our work seriously, but fully understand that people have lives outside of their job. We like to keep it light, while providing an amazing product for our clients. This may not work for all companies, but it's worked well for us.The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting field level investigations with a focus on ecological site evaluations, weed surveys, rare plant surveys, reclamation assessments, native grassland assessments and wetland assessments. Weekly schedules are typically 5 and 2, however depending on the project, you may be expected to be away for multiple weeks at a time in the field.You must be familiar with ecosystem classification, ecosystem mapping, wetland ecology, and rare plant surveys in western Canada. Experience with GIS, soil assessment and environmental monitoring would also be an asset in this role. Proficiency with word and excel is a must.Responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to:

  • Plan and lead vegetation field programs (ecosystem and wetland classification, rare plant surveys, and invasive plants surveys).
  • Classification and delineation of wetlands according to regionally applicable classification systems.
  • Analyze and summarize vegetation and wetland field data.
  • Author technical reports presenting results of field studies.
  • Author regulatory applications (federal, provincial and municipal).
  • Assess potential effects of projects on plants and vegetation communities and describe suitable mitigation measures.
  • Lead the development of weed management plans and reclamation plans
Candidates will have the following qualifications and experience:
  • Bachelor's degree or technical diploma in biology, botany, soil science, or related discipline.
  • A minimum of 3 years of relevant field experience, preferably gained from a consulting background.
  • Knowledge of provincial and federal regulations, approval processes, and survey guidelines.
  • Excellent plant identification skills, with particular focus on native species found in the prairie and forested regions of Alberta, Saskatchewan and British Columbia.
  • Experience classifying and delineating wetlands in accordance with regionally appropriate classification systems.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Currently registered as a P.Biol., P. Ag., or BIT, or eligible for registration as a Professional Biologist in Alberta.
  • Must work well with others and be organized. Organization is key as you will be responsible for working on various projects concurrently.
  • Ability to read a map and use a GPS. It seems simple but some people lack this skill.
  • Valid Class 5 driver's license, H2S Alive, TDG, ATV safe rider, and First Aid are required. If you don't have any of these currently, we can work on getting them for you.
Assets for the position include:
  • ArcGIS or QGIS knowledge
  • Experience classifying soils in accordance with the Canadian System of Soil Classification.
  • Experience conducting environmental monitoring for construction or exploration projects.
