Position Purpose
Within the portfolio of the Office of the Vice-President, Research & Innovation, the Office of Animal Ethics & Compliance is responsible for supporting research teams at the University of Ottawa and its affiliated research institutes in the humane and ethical use of animals in scientific activities, while ensuring such matters are in alignment with regulatory requirements established by national and provincial level regulatory agencies. Reporting to the Director, Animal Ethics & Compliance (AEC), the Protocol Analyst, Animal Ethics provides significant content and process expertise to support preparation, submission, review and on-going administration of animal care and use applications submitted by the research community for review by the institutional Animal Care Committee (ACC) in accordance with internal and external regulatory standards.
In this role, your responsibilities will include:

• Receive and process new animal use protocol (AUP) applications and all post-approval applications (i.e., amendments, annual renewals, full renewals, closing reports) for review by the ACC or its delegates in accordance with ACC Policies.
• Conduct an independent pre-review and communicates requests to researchers/applicants (including Principal Investigators, research associates, graduate students, etc.) related to conformance with application standards, while also advising of appropriate methods and/or accepted practices to address these issues. Communicate requests for modifications or supplementary details from the ACC to applicants and assist researchers in developing appropriate solutions to problems or concerns identified by the reviewers.
• Take effective action to advance applications that are delayed in the process due to poor understanding, missing documentation, or other issues.
• Provide administrative support for the ACC, including reminders of meetings with agendas, drafting of meeting minutes, keeping up-to-date records pertaining to all aspects of AEC operations, tracking animal use for regulatory reports, and helping ensure that information on the departmental website is kept up-to-date and complete.
• Contribute as needed to other AEC activities and initiatives including but not limited to Post-Approval Monitoring activities (e.g., coordination and conduction of annual site visits, lab visits, audits, etc.) and Animal User Training Program coordination and delivery.

What you will bring:

• Advanced knowledge of animal-based research practices, procedures, principles, and guidelines, normally acquired through relevant work experience (preferably in an academic research environment) and postsecondary studies in a related discipline (e.g., veterinary technology, science, biomedical science, animal health).
• Bilingualism (French/English) required (majority of day-to-day functions and responsibilities are conducted in English).
• Ability to work independently and organize multiple ongoing projects and tasks while consistently producing high quality work under indirect supervision.
• Demonstrated ability to consistently and effectively apply high-level critical thinking, decision-making and communication skills in a high volume, fast-paced environment.
• Well-developed administrative and office skills (Microsoft Suite), including knowledge of committee and meeting support techniques; experience with animal facility software applications (i.e., Topaz Elements) is an asset.
• Strong working knowledge and familiarity with applicable regulations, including but not limited to the Ontario Animals for Research Act and its Regulations and Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) policies and guidelines is an asset.
• Familiarity with common procedures and research techniques utilized in research with rodents and/or fish, along with a general understanding of the academic research environment is an asset.
• Ability to maintain high degree of professionalism and judgement, dealing with confidential, sensitive, and/or proprietary information pertaining to research applications, ACC discussions, and non-compliance concerns.
• Highly effective communication verbal and written communication skills with a service-oriented and professional attitude with an ability to work well in a team and independently.
• Canadian Association of Laboratory Animal Sciences (CALAS) RLAT, RMLAT (or equivalent designations: e.g., AALAS ALAT, LAT, LATG) considered an asset.
