Job Description



Ballard Power Systems is a leading global provider of innovative clean energy solutions, providing clean energy fuel cell products that enable optimized power systems for a range of applications. Ballard is an international public company traded on both NASDAQ and TSX.
We are seeking an Intellectual Property Specialist to manage an international patent portfolio and provide expertise on all types of intellectual property protection, including patents, copyrights, trademarks, and other forms of IP. This position plays a vital role in protecting and managing Ballard\xe2\x80\x99s intellectual assets.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage the registration and maintenance of intellectual property rights, including trademarks, patents, and copyrights
  • Conduct thorough search and analysis of IP issues, including infringement and licensing opportunities
  • Conduct the preparation and prosecution of patent applications, and manage external counsel in relation to same
  • Perform patent searches and investigate competitor technology
  • Collaborate with internal teams to provide guidance and support on IP matters, including product development, marketing, and branding
  • Stay updated on changes in IP laws, regulations, and industry best practices
  • Assist with management of IP litigation and dispute resolution
  • Conduct IP training and awareness programs for employes to promote understanding and compliance
  • Maintain accurate and organized records of IP assets and related documentation


Qualifications:
  • Patent agent or lawyer with a university degree in in engineering or science (preferably in chemistry or material science, although mechanical engineering or physics backgrounds will be considered)
  • 5+ years of solid patent application drafting and prosecution
  • In-depth knowledge of intellectual property laws, regulations, and practices
  • Strong analytical and research skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Detail oriented with strong organizational skills
  • Familiarity with trademark, patent, and copyright registration process
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills
  • Self-motivated and proactive
  • Adaptable and flexible in a fast-paced environment
  • Analytical and logical thinker with attention to detail
