About the roleFinding better ways to provide the materials the world needs.We are looking for an Instrumentation & Control Technician to support our ongoing maintenance and shutdown activities at the Strathcona Works facility east of Edmonton. We do the work only if it is safe, and we invest to make sure every member of the team has the quality tools they need to do their job.Reporting to the Supervisor and working a Tuesday to Friday schedule with four 10-hour day shifts, you will be:
  • Working safely in accordance with Rio Tinto safety standards, including lock-out/tag-out and isolation procedures, and engaging in safety initiatives, utilizing safety equipment (harness, lanyard, SRL\'s, man-lifts, scissor-lifts) when working at heights.
  • Performing Preventative Maintenance work safely to meet production schedules, while optimizing and improving maintenance processes.
  • Inspecting, designing, calibrating, troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining electronic, hydraulic, and pneumatic instrumentation and control devices, including valves, actuators, meters, and analyzers, as well as designing, procuring, and installing instrumentation and electrical systems of simple to medium complexity.
  • Testing, troubleshooting, repairing, and replacing electrical systems, discrete devices, motors, variable frequency drives, SCRs, lighting, and logic control components/devices, with the ability to read and interpret blueprints, electrical diagrams, and OEM Manuals.
  • Programming PLC and HMI-based control devices, and collaborating with automation specialists to troubleshoot, program, and repair control systems as necessary.
  • Responding to emergency situations and call-outs as required to ensure operational continuity.
  • Working effectively both individually and within a team, communicating respectfully with all team members and stakeholders to maintain a cohesive work environment.
  • Participating in maintenance optimization and improvement initiatives to enhance operational efficiency and effectiveness.

  • Certification of Qualification as an Interprovincial Instrumentation & Control Technician is required. Preference will be given to candidates who also hold dual trade certification as an Electrician.
  • At least ten years of industrial experience in a heavy manufacturing environment.
  • Proven experience in performing routine maintenance on instruments, high and low voltage power distribution systems, rectifiers, and transformers.
  • Solid understanding and familiarity with electronic and pneumatic instrumentation systems.

  • Familiarity with electronic and pneumatic instrumentation systems, with strong technical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision within a multi-discipline team, demonstrating leadership skills, including support to contractors on site.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills, with proficiency in MS Office applications and experience with CMMS (SAP).
