About the Role
Provides a complete range of technical support for scientific instruments and equipment in both research and teaching laboratories within the Chemistry Department. Operates and maintains the elemental analysis (EA) facility as a service to the faculty and students in the Department of Chemistry, primarily, in the Faculty of Science, in general, and researchers outside of SFU. Performs maintenance and repair work on scientific equipment and instrumentation in the Analytical and Physical Chemistry teaching laboratories (including, but not limited to, gas chromatography, atomic absorption, thermal gravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, high performance liquid chromatography, and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry) and in the EA facility (elemental analyzer). Provides support for shared departmental research facilities.
Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in Chemistry, with 3 years of relevant experiment including training in analytical methods or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. NMR and mass spectrometry knowledge and experience is an asset.

  • Ability to operate, troubleshoot and perform repairs on an elemental analysis.
  • Ability to use various analytical methods at an advanced level.
  • Ability to provide technical advice and consultation on conducting and designing experiments.
  • Ability to provide training to users on proper operation of various scientific instrumentation.
  • Ability to adapt, modify, and demonstrate scientific equipment and instruments.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and repair various scientific instruments and equipment.
  • Ability to work with frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to exercise mature judgment and initiative.
  • Ability to learn new front-end software for scientific instrument operation.
  • Ability to use word processing, spreadsheet and database applications (e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel, Access) at a basic level.
  • Excellent knowledge of a range of chromatographic and mass spectrometer technologies (i.e., GC, GCMS, HPLC) used for research purposes.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent analytical reasoning and problem-solving skills.
  • Good organizational skills. Ability to lift, move or carry equipment 20 kg or more.
  • Ability to work flexible hours.
