Reporting to the Engineer in Residence - Mechanical, the incumbent instructs and supervises students, faculty and staff in the basic skills of mechanical manufacturing in order to improve the teaching of design, and to provide students and staff with more \xe2\x80\x9chands-on\xe2\x80\x9d skills to increase their involvement in these activities.PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for the instruction of students, faculty, staff, in machining and manufacturing processes, machine tool training and laboratory development.
  • Ensure safety standards and established operating procedures are followed.
  • Develop laboratory content, write lab manuals.
  • Assess students\' competencies and evaluate student assignments and other deliverables pertinent to manufacturing courses.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, charts and tables or study sample parts to determine machining or manufacturing operation to be performed, and plan best sequence of operations. Advise students on design for engineering and manufacturing performance.
  • Compute dimensions and tolerances and measure and lay out work pieces.
  • Instruct the use of Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) software.
  • Set up, operate and maintain a variety of machine tools including metrology equipment, conventional and computer numerically controlled (CNC) tools to perform precision, non-repetitive machining operations such as sawing, turning, milling, drilling and other operations.
  • Supervise, co-ordinate and schedule the activities of graduate and undergraduate students who machine metal into parts, products, tools and dies or moulds with precise dimensions as well as coordinate work activities with other departments.
  • Actively participates in the continuous improvement of the Engineering, Design and Manufacturing Laboratory (EDML) as directed.
  • Source and supply materials, machinery and components.
  • Submit reports and documentation of work as specified by supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor\'s Degree in Education or Engineering with two to four years of industry experience, preferably in mechanical engineering design or machining. Equivalent experiences will be considered.
  • Excellent knowledge of machining using lathes, milling, drilling, band saws and creating jigs and fixtures. Ability to program, operate and set-up CNC machines and to interpret engineering drawings. Proficient in use and instruction of general manufacturing processes including hand tools, sheet metal work and fabrication processes included but not limited to forming, cutting, joining and welding operations.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and organization skills, and be able to work independently or as part of team with students, other technical staff and faculty. Ability to prioritize projects, set and achieve deadlines is required.
  • Good knowledge (Level 4) of spoken and written English in order to provide instruction and to write/update manuals, posters and other technical teaching accessories, needed for efficient undergraduate lab procedures; basic knowledge (Level 3) of spoken French. Knowledge of written French is an asset.
  • Basic knowledge of Word (in order to format documents) and Excel (in order to work on spreadsheets. Ability to read and create engineering drawings, preferably using Computer Aided Drawing software (eg AutoCAD, Solidworks, etc.).
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Teaching experience in a laboratory setting is an asset.
