Job Description


As an Environmental Monitoring Instructor, you will instruct learners, facilitate learning, and evaluate student progress in both classroom and field settings. To help you achieve this, you will plan, organize, and safely manage learning activities while providing academic advising services to learners in Yukon University\'s Environmental Monitoring Certificate Program. A key component of your role will be to teaching skills for effectively assisting in monitoring the environmental impacts of development projects in Canada and facilitating the knowledge and skills development that Indigenous people need to participate in environmental monitoring efforts conducted by industry, government, and community organizations. Your specific areas of instruction will include Environmental Core Skills, Practical Skills, Environmental Monitoring - Regulation, Environmental Monitoring - Research, Safety Certifications and Cultural Diversity.

You may be required to coordinate specialty instructors and resources where necessary for safety certifications including Wilderness First Aid, Boat Safety, ATV Operator, Snowmobile Operator and Firearms Safety Education.

An Environmental Science degree and recent industry experience as an Environmental Scientist is required. Knowledge of fire and wildlife safety (campfire/bear safety), mapping, GIS and GPS, as well as an understanding of compliance monitoring, reporting and enforcement of local ecology, cultural sensitivity and the linkages between ecology and traditional ecological knowledge will need to be demonstrated. Familiarity with national and regional environmental protection legislation and regulatory processes and best practices is required.

You have general knowledge and experience in the instruction of adult learners, as well as knowledge of current teaching/learning methods and classroom management.

Your experience working within the environmental sector including health and safety and monitoring a range of environmental components are key assets. Your resourcefulness, creativity, and adaptability, along with your ability to work as part of a team and independently, will help make you an ideal candidate.

Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered. Preference will be given to those with experience working with Yukon First Nations.
