BCIT's School of Health Sciences is seeking a

temporary, part-time (0.4

FTE

) Instructor

in the

Biotechnology

program to teach 1 course in the Winter term of the Biotechnology Program (BIOT 4201, Microbiology 2). We are seeking a candidate with a passion for post secondary education as well as recent knowledge and technical expertise in microbiology and molecular biology. They must be able to work with students hands-on in the laboratory to perform experiments involving microbial culture, bacterial transformation and molecular biology techniques including, PCR, gel electrophoresis, DNA isolation,16S rRNA sequencing, in vitro transcription and RNA analysis.

The course the successful candidate will be delivering is composed of a 3-hour lecture component and a 3-hour laboratory component each week. The successful candidate must be able to:Develop and deliver innovative lectures, assignments and assessments. Develop and deliver current and innovative laboratory experiments and techniques. Liaise with students when necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS

:



MSc degree in a related field, with a PhD preferable. Strong theoretical and technical background in microbiology, specifically microbial genetics, and molecular biology are required. Current knowledge of immunology, virology and bacterial pathogenesis is also desirable. Teaching experience in microbiology or a related life sciences discipline is preferred. Technical experience with bacterial cell culture, bacterial transformation and molecular biology techniques such as PCR and agarose gel electrophoresis is required. Technical experience operating fermenters, working with RNA and knowledge of in vitrotranscription are considered assets. Experience with DNA/RNA sequence analysis and molecular biology software (eg. SnapGene) is required. Experience with quantitative image analysis software (eg. ImageJ) is considered an asset. Good understanding of the biotechnology industry and recent industry experience are preferred. Excellent oral and written communication skills in the English language. Strong organizational and time-management skills. Professional attitude which stresses commitment, collaboration, initiative, responsibility for professional growth, open-mindedness and flexibility.

Salary Range

Salary Range: $65,045 - $113,545 per annum.


Additional Salary Information


Salary prorated based on percentage and term of appointment. Salary based on education, experience and placement criteria as outlined in the Collective Agreement.
