About Our Opportunity

As the Inspector/Checker/Weigher, there\'s no worry about doing the same thing day in, day out. Things are always changing, no two days are alike, and every job is different!

You will oversee and maintain records of the daily delivery and distribution of materials at highway construction sites. You will ensure quality of materials delivered, and accuracy in information that is recorded.

Primary Accountabilities

Assignment of duties will be in accordance with Maintenance or Construction services operational needs including duties associated with Weigher, Checker and Inspector positions such as: weighing and recording materials; ensuring trucks are operating safely and within required weights; and inspecting, cleaning and calibrating scales. Other duties would include: assessing the methods and effectiveness of traffic control to ensure traffic is dealt with in a safe and respectful manner; keeping a daily diary in which the contractor\'s activities are noted; ensuring the contractor\'s work adheres to the general specifications of the project; and monitor the contractor\'s operation to ensure operations conform to applicable safety regulations. You will also be required to assist the Survey Technician with on site duties on a regular basis. District operating policies and procedures and geographic differences across the province may dictate the nature and methods of the work performed.

Qualifications and Experience

Grade 12 completion or an acceptable equivalent of education and experience. Previous construction experience in areas such as bridge repair, road construction and surveying are an asset.

A valid driver\'s license is required. Work is often performed in isolated areas, therefore access to a reliable vehicle is required.

The ability to read design plans and documents with an aptitude for mathematics is essential. You are a self-motivated individual who is effective at working independently with minimal supervision. Proven skills in time management, organization, and attention to detail are critical in this role.

Your exceptional interpersonal and communication (verbal and written) skills are key when liaising with staff, contractors, and the traveling public. You consistently maintain a professional and courteous disposition and hold a high standard for client and customer service.

Certification in the following areas of training are considered assets: Traffic Control, Temporary Workplace Signage, Anti Stripping, Nova Scotia Forest Products Association Tree Felling, Erosion & Sediment Control, WHMIS, First Aid and CPR, Transportation of Dangerous Goods, Fall Protection, and Chainsaw Safety.

We will assess the above qualifications using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Equivalency

An equivalent combination of training, education and experience will be considered. Equivalencies may include, but are not limited to:

  • At least 3 years of related experience.

Working Conditions

This position is physically demanding. Work is performed on construction sites, heavily travelled highways and in rough isolated areas with inherent exposure to dust/dirt, equipment noise, blasting, extreme weather temperatures and dangerous heights. This position requires you to climb, lift and carry various equipment throughout construction sites.

The standard hours of work for employees is 8 hours a day (40 hours a week) Monday to Friday. During the construction season there will be numerous situations where you will be required to work overtime and/or nightwork.

Additional Information

Incumbents will be trained in the duties of Inspector, Checker and Weigher. At the end of the training and/or testing process, employees who are deemed qualified are expected to perform the duties of Inspector, Checker and Weigher when required in the zone(s) where they normally work.

There are two (2) positions available and will be based out of Guysborough (Zone 7) in the Antigonish Construction Area (Zone 7, 8 and 9).

These opportunities are for a 52-week Year-Round position - the duties of which are full time and continuous in nature.

Pay Grade: INSPECTR

Salary Range: $22.02 Hourly
