About Our Opportunity

The Inspector works independently and is responsible for the enforcement of the Boiler and Pressure Equipment Regulations, as well as the Power Engineer\'s Regulations, in your assigned territory. This is done through on-site inspection, providing information, advice and technical direction and interpretation of applicable American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Boiler and Pressure Vessel Codes and the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) Codes and Standards to owners, operators, employers and employees, contractors, suppliers, consultants, power engineers, etc.

As the Inspector you will conduct a wide variety of specialized, related technical inspections as well as investigations of accidents and fatalities and alleged violations under the legislation. The Inspector conducts qualification testing of pressure welders and brazers, invigilating exams under the Power Engineers Regulations and ensure compliance with these regulations by issuing orders, including immediate stop work orders as well as initiating prosecution action.

As the Officer, you will work under the general supervision of the Chief Inspector/ Manager, Boiler & Pressure Equipment Section of the Technical Safety Division.

Primary Accountabilities

  • Conducts reviews of welding procedures, design drawings and specifications for boilers, pressure vessels and associated fittings to ensure compliance with applicable Codes and Standards.
  • Prepare monthly activity and status reports as well as attending meetings and preparing associated correspondence.
  • Provide input to the technical development of the relevant ASME and CSA codes and standards
  • Conduct reviews of quality control systems of ASME Code shops and CSA B51 Code Shops involved in the manufacture of ASME and CSA B51 Code stamped boilers and pressure vessels, to satisfy the requirements set out by ASME and the National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors.
Qualifications and Experience

This may be the right opportunity for you if you have completed high school as well as a related trade or technical training in the area of specialty plus 7 years of related experience after the course completion; an equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.

Relevant trade or technical training includes any of the following:
  • Certified Engineering Technologist or Technician with a background in the mechanical engineering field;
  • Power Engineer, First or Second Class;
  • Journeyman Boilermaker,
  • Quality Control/Welding Engineering Technology with experience in pressure welding, pressure equipment manufacturing, construction, repair or maintenance.
You have knowledge and experience in the use of non-destructive testing equipment and methodologies and the requirements of applicable ASME Code Sections, interpretation of mechanical drawings, boiler and pressure vessel design, piping design, welding, refrigeration, metallurgy, feed water conditioning, instrumentation, fuels and fuels gases as well as combustion principles, thermodynamics, pumps, turbines, compressors and air conditioning.

You must be able to work in tight confined spaces and heights

You possess the following:
  • Exceptional communication (written and verbal);
  • Computer skills including management of electronic files;
  • Proficiency in word processing and spreadsheets such as Microsoft Word and Excel and the ability to operate customized computer applications;
  • Interpersonal, relationship building, and public speaking skills; and
  • Strong problem solving and decision making skills.
Certifications Required

You passed an examination and hold or are willing to obtain within 1 year of appointment, a Commission from the National Board of Boiler Pressure Inspectors and shall have been engaged in ASME boiler and pressure vessel code related work such as inspection or design under the provisions of the ASME code, or administration of shop inspections services under the ASME Code.

You must also have passed an examination, and hold or obtain within 2 years of appointment, the Authorized Inspector AI Commission, issued by the National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors, which verifies the candidate\'s ability to ascertain the validity and quality of the fabrication, welding, non-destructive examination and other quality control requirements of the ASME Code. You may be required to complete Modules 1 though 13 of the Welding Inspection Technology Program offered through the Canadian Welding Bureau.

You must have, or be able to obtain and maintain, a security clearance certificate issued through the Safety and Security Office of Public Works and Government Services Canada (or its equivalent) and be able to be designated as a Safety Inspector under the Treasury Board of Canada Safety Standards.

You must have the following:
  • A valid Class 5 Driver\'s License along with access to a reliable vehicle; and
  • A current certificate in Emergency First Aid (or the ability to obtain one within 6 months of appointment).

Salary Range: $2,669.67 - $3,100.80 Bi-Weekly
