Job Description

Reporting to the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO), the Information Security Officer, Planning and Consulting will be responsible for leadership in development, communication and advising on information security policies, standards and general education.
Key Responsibilities

  • Act as a key expert in assessing strengths and weaknesses in security planning efforts, and evaluating the security of information management workflows, technologies, and peer relationships (supply chain, partnerships, political/social risk assessment, etc.).
  • Assess and manage risk framework implementations for university information systems and information assets. Lead design, implementation, education efforts, and reporting to university leadership. Work with CISO to create tactical and strategic risk mitigation plans.
  • Develop, review, implement and maintain an engaging security awareness education program which meets all industry regulations, standards and compliance requirements and aims to mitigate human information security risks and move employees toward a security mindset.
  • Consult and work with units on security plan development. Conduct risk assessments and information security consultations and provide guidance and education in building security and disaster recovery plans for key projects, institutional efforts and information systems.
  • Manage communications on information security topics and trends. Support CISO and CIO in creating and delivering presentations and reporting on information security risks, trends, and critical issues to all levels of university leadership.
  • Assist in the design, development and implementation of new policies, standards and procedures in collaboration with key stakeholders and service providers. Lead and assist CISO in audit compliance.
NoteThe successful applicant will be eligible for hybrid work (combination of in-person work on campus and remote work) as agreed by all parties based on operational requirements and university guidelines.
Required Qualifications
  • Undergraduate degree in relevant field (e.g. Communications, Information Management, Information Security) plus a minimum of seven to ten years relevant experience (or equivalent combination of training and experience).
  • Completion of industry security certifications (GIAC/ISC2 or related security designations), or a willingness and ability to achieve relevant information security designations within 3-5 years.
  • In-depth knowledge of IT practices, processes, controls, risk and governance frameworks as well as a broad knowledge of IT support environments, IT infrastructure, endpoint device management, networks, and cloud service environments as well as demonstrated commitment to ongoing formal and self-study to remain current with best practices in multiple disciplinary areas.
  • Experience relevant to information security systems and implementation and the demonstrated ability to learn technically complex environments.
  • Proven ability to problem-solve, and assess risks on complex, multidimensional initiatives and projects with excellent judgement, initiative, and follow-through.
  • Demonstrated solid communication (verbal and written), negotiation and presentation skills.

  • Experience in a postsecondary or public-sector environment.
