Purpose of the Role



The Infant Wellness Worker supports the health, safety, and developmental needs of infants (ages 0-24 months) and their caregivers through culturally informed, community-based services. Rooted in Omushkego values of relational caregiving and intergenerational knowledge, the role supports attachment, nourishment, bonding, and early growth. This position is part of the CYMS prevention team and works closely with health partners, First Nations service providers, and family-based supports.


By intervening early and supporting parenting capacity in a strengths-based way, the Infant Wellness Worker helps ensure children grow up in safe, loving, and connected homes while reducing the risk of protection involvement.

Core Responsibilities



1. Relational and Community Engagement



Establish supportive, respectful relationships with infants' caregivers and extended families Provide in-home and land-based services that reflect the cultural and spiritual needs of young children Collaborate with First Nations early years programs, midwifery teams, and family support staff

2. Program-Specific Responsibilities



Offer education and support on infant feeding, sleep, motor development, attachment, safety, and regulation Support parents in building confidence, daily routines, and responsive caregiving practices Monitor infant wellness indicators and connect families to appropriate medical or developmental services when concerns arise Assist with transportation and access to community health and prevention programs as needed Maintain accurate documentation of visits, service plans, and follow-ups in agency databases

3. Legal and Ethical Practice



Recognize and respond to signs of neglect, caregiver burnout, or unsafe living conditions using a harm reduction and prevention lens Comply with all privacy and documentation requirements under PHIPA, FIPPA, and agency policy Uphold First Nations rights to self-determination in early childhood development, as reflected in Bill C-92

4. Team and Agency Participation



Collaborate with prevention, protection, early years, and health teams to align service planning Participate in reflective supervision, training, and seasonal cycles of community engagement Assist in community baby welcome ceremonies, infant supply distribution, and early parenting gatherings

Required Qualifications and Experience



Diploma or degree in Early Childhood Education, Indigenous Studies, Child Development, or a related field; or equivalent lived/professional experience Knowledge of infant care practices, cultural parenting approaches, and family-based prevention work Experience supporting young families in home, clinical, or community-based settings Understanding of First Nations family systems and early intervention models Excellent communication, documentation, and coaching skills
Equivalency will be considered. Cultural fluency and connections to local First Nations are strong assets.
