Job Description


Purpose: The Apple Industry on PEI continues to grow substantially each year. The PEI Tree Fruit Growers Association is now looking to hire someone to take over the role of Research Coordinator. Reporting to the Board of Directors this position works to provide production advice to assist PEI Tree Fruit Growers, to increase capability, enhance the skills needed to improve tree health, productivity and enhance competitiveness. Duties \xe2\x97\x8f Support the growth and development of a fast-emerging, diverse, high value, sustainable and climate smart agriculture on PEI. \xe2\x97\x8f Identify, trial, develop and communicate agronomic best practices for sustainable production of this high value industry. \xe2\x97\x8f Work with the growers to find answers to practical questions, which includes in-office research and in-person site visits. \xe2\x97\x8f Prepare research and funding proposals with all stakeholder groups to develop research programs and trials. \xe2\x97\x8f Conduct and co-ordinate market research activities to ensure PEI\xe2\x80\x99s Apples are actively branded and marketed effectively and efficiently for all stakeholders. \xe2\x97\x8f Organize and co-ordinate growers both new and experienced, specialists, educational activities/demonstrations both on and off the farm to enable apple grower\xe2\x80\x99s success and sustainability. \xe2\x97\x8f Development and implementation of soil health, tree nutrition, and Integrated Pest Management Strategies, ensuring all PEI agricultural regulations are adhered to. \xe2\x97\x8f Advising growers and industry organizations on recent research and beneficial management practices. \xe2\x97\x8f Contribute to the continuing development of the strong and robust Apple Industry Association. \xe2\x97\x8f Coordinating and leading association meetings, orchard tours in a timely manner. \xe2\x97\x8f Creating connections with regional/national experts specializing in apple tree agronomy, including in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick \xe2\x97\x8f Attend relevant Industry training opportunities and to disseminate knowledge to all stakeholders Qualifications/experience Either:
A Degree M.Sc. (preferred) with at least one degree in a field that relates
A DEGREE to the responsibilities of this position such as horticulture, plant science, physiology, entomology, or plant pathology with a minimum of two years\xe2\x80\x99
EXPERIENCE experience working in the apple industry with direct experience in pest management with respect to apples/or extension preferred. OR
\xe2\x97\x8f Minimum of five years\xe2\x80\x99 experience working in the apple/tree fruit industry with direct experience in pest management with respect to apples/or extension preferred. \xe2\x97\x8f Rural experience with an understanding and appreciation of general horticultural practices \xe2\x97\x8f Current subject matter expertise related to apple production, pest & disease management, fertility, production economics, and orchard business management \xe2\x97\x8f Demonstrated skills in interpreting and applying evidence-based information and research findings \xe2\x97\x8f Experience in technology-based knowledge transfer to the agriculture industry \xe2\x97\x8f Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects, as well as an understanding of, or willingness to learn consulting skills \xe2\x97\x8f Highly effective interpersonal skills and the ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds \xe2\x97\x8f Demonstrated skills in planning and implementing educational workshops, and knowledge of adult learning principles \xe2\x97\x8f Excellent written and oral communication skills \xe2\x97\x8f Excellent interpersonal skills \xe2\x97\x8f Skills in Computer Applications \xe2\x97\x8f Valid Driver\xe2\x80\x99s Licence and own transportation Only candidates who have been granted interviews will be contacted.
