Position Summary





The Industrial Hygiene & PCM Analyst is responsible for performing phase contrast microscopy (PCM) analysis for airborne fiber counting, supporting industrial hygiene monitoring programs, and assisting with waste sampling and environmental assessments. This role involves a combination of laboratory work, fieldwork, and data reporting to ensure compliance with occupational health, safety, and environmental regulations.

PCM Laboratory Analysis:




o Perform Phase Contrast Microscopy (PCM) analysis to quantify airborne fiber concentrations from workplace air samples in accordance with NIOSH 7400 (or equivalent) methodologies.



o Prepare, analyze, and document sample results following quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA) procedures.



o Maintain laboratory equipment, conduct calibrations, and ensure compliance with accreditation standards.



o Assist in asbestos air clearance testing and reporting in compliance with regulatory requirements.


Industrial Hygiene Monitoring:




o Conduct air quality monitoring for workplace contaminants, including asbestos, lead, silica, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and particulate matter.



o Operate and calibrate personal and area air sampling pumps for industrial hygiene monitoring.



o Assist with indoor air quality (IAQ) assessments, noise surveys, and ventilation evaluations.



o Collect and handle industrial hygiene samples for chemical, biological, and physical hazard analysis.



o Maintain accurate field logs, prepare technical reports, and compile data for client and regulatory submissions.


Waste Sampling & Environmental Support:




o Collect soil, water, hazardous materials, and waste samples for laboratory analysis.



o Ensure proper chain of custody procedures for sample tracking and regulatory compliance.



o Assist with hazardous waste documentation, including characterization, handling, and regulatory reporting.



o Conduct site assessments (Phase I & II ESAs) and hazardous building materials assessments.



o Participate in spill response and environmental monitoring programs as required.


Other Duties as Assigned.





Tools, Systems, Equipment and Machinery




Microsoft Office;

RKI Eagle 2 (or similar) Vapour Screeners;

Trimble GeoXH GPS; and

Low Flow Groundwater Sampling Equipment (Peristaltic pumps, bladder pumps).





Physical Requirements





At times, it may be required to endure standing for long periods of time, lifting objects up to 100 lbs, performing repetitive motions, or completing physically demanding tasks during project field work.



Working Environment



There is a possibility of cuts, bruises, straining, disease and /or severe injury if safe work practices are not being followed.



Work is primarily carried out indoors, but project work in the field will be required. Therefore, there can be exposure to extreme weather along with exposure to dust, noise, mud, water, smoke, and bacteria.




Qualifications




NIOSH 582 certification

(or equivalent) in PCM analysis is required or willingness to obtain.

University Degree or College Diploma in Occupational/Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science, Chemistry, or a related field.

Professional certification (or eligibility) such as Registered Occupational Hygienist Technician (ROHT), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CRST) is considered an asset.

1-3 years of experience in industrial hygiene, environmental monitoring, or occupational health and safety.

Adept at working with little supervision, problem solving and adapting to change;

Able to find ways to obtain project objectives and deliverables, while maintaining time and budget constraints;

Strong communication skills, both written and oral; ability to interact with various types of stakeholders, regulators and first nations;

Experience with various types of environmental consulting projects and ability to problem solve in the field;

First Aid training - KBL will provide training; and

WHIMIS/TDG certification - KBL will provide training.

Class 5 Driver's License
